Many people think that believing in Bigfoot is a lot like believing in Santa Claus or believing in the tooth fairy. In fact, many people believe that it is also "silly." Not believing in Bigfoot is, of course, normal and it is what most people do, but what the actual frustrating part is, is that non-believers do not understand what the believers, believe. There are many "myths" about what believers think Bigfoot is, how it acts, or how it can possibly be real. There are many questions that people think is a quick argument to disprove it, like "Why hasn't some redneck hillbilly shot one?" or "Where are the remains? Where is the physical evidence?" and others like it.
First, I want to dispel the notion that people believe there is one bigfoot. Of course, it is silly and irrational to think that there is one mythical monster roaming about the woods since the early 1950s. That is why believers think that Bigfoot is a species, and an incredibly endangered one at that. There are enthusiasts that have mapped out migration patterns based on food consumption, there is a diet we believe it would prefer, and so on.
Furthermore, we do not believe Bigfoot is a monster, or an alien or some other thing, we believe that it is an animal. Some believe it is an animal lost in time, explained by the Bigfoot-Giganto theory. This suggests that the Bigfoot is a surviving relative of the genus Gigatopithicus. Gigantopithecus was a giant cousin of the orangutan.
Many believe that Bigfoot is a missing link in the human, or great ape, evolutional chain. Does this mean that Bigfoot could possibly be an early version of humans? Not likely. Bigfoot's are considered to be more ape than man and many evidence to it's presumed behaviors seems to point to this as well.
One may ask, "How do you know all this about Bigfoot? Where is the evidence?". In short, there is physical evidence. There are many examples of fur, scat, skin, footprints, photographs and vidioes and other such evidence that we can't place to any other creature on the known record. Many people confuse remains and evidence. Do we have remains? Well not exactly. There, of course, is no accounts, that aren't hoaxes, of dead bodies or Bigfoot roadkill, or some "hillbilly shooting one" in the woods. There are many explanations for this. A large, and presumed, of course, incredibly rare animal, with a presumed long life span, will leave very little physical evidence behind. The odds of someone who is actually looking for them, which is an incredibly small portion of the population, are low. One final reason for evidence and remains being hard to find is that, there is simply no one looking for them. No self respecting scientist or scientific organization will begin a large investigation to find a creature that may or may not be there. The people that are looking for it are small organizations or simply, ametuers, that don't always know what they are doing. There are of course, to combat this arguement, T.v. shows and series' that di conduct these searches and that end up finding nothing to very little eveidence for what they are looking for.
Overall, there are many explainations to why people beleive in Bigfoot and why people continue to search for it's exsistence to this day. Is Bigfoot real or not? We may never know, however, that will not stop people from beleiveing in it, and trying their best to find it and understand the animal fully.
