Cleveland, especially nowadays, seems like a mediocre city. "Mistake on the Lake," they call it. Hit hard by the recession and still seeming to hurt, Cleveland has always been full of tough, hardworking people. If there is one thing Cleveland should be known for is their sports, or perhaps what they should be made fun of. Out of all the 3-sport cities in the United States, Cleveland has the longest sports championship drought currently, with their football team, the Browns, winning it back in 1964. Ever since then, the past 51 years have been painful to watch at times, ranging from the infamous "Ten Cent Beer Night" during an Indians game to the "The Fumble" when the Browns were actually in the playoffs. And all three sports teams have struggled, with trouble just making the playoffs, except recently for the Cavaliers who are currently in the NBA finals, led by one man who you may have heard of... LeBron James.
Where Chicago had Jordan, Cleveland has LeBron, and always has had him, ever since he picked up that basketball in Akron, Ohio. He took Cleveland to the finals once but alas, he could only do so much. Then when he decide to take his "talents to South Beach" he broke our hearts, and we lashed out in rage, like a teenager with a broken heart. And when he came back, he came back for us, and brought faith back to the city.
As an Ohioan and a Cleveland sports fan, it can be very rough to watch Cleveland sports teams, especially when the majority of the time they are awful. But recently, I've had to stop what I'm doing and just realize how extraordinary it would be if the Cavs do in fact win the championship. For a man to leave his home and get ridiculed, then ultimately come back and take the city to where it is now. He didn't have to come back, he very well could have won another in Miami but he made another decision, and whether that decision will turn him from greatness to legendary is still to be determined. But the fact that this moment in history could very well be one of the greatest sports moments of all time should lead one to hope, to have faith, to believe.
I'll just leave this right here...
