If you are in a sorority, I'm almost positive you've experienced this: being labeled a sorority girl. Now, when people say this, they're more than likely saying this as an insult. If you're anything like me, you're sick of being labeled a sorority girl and it being a bad thing. Here are eight solid reasons I am a sorority girl, and proud of it.
My sorority selflessly gives back to the community.
As a sister of Kappa Delta, from the very beginning of recruitment, I learned about the philanthropies that my sorority advocates for. We don't just support the Girl Scouts of America, we also raise money for Prevent Child Abuse America and the Child Advocacy Center of Hamilton County. We host events for the Girl Scouts, such as Trunk or Treat around Halloween, and throw tea parties where we dress up as Disney Princesses. In the fall, we host an event called War of the Wings, where we sell tickets so people can come tailgate with us and enjoy all-you-can-eat wings (Kappa Delta, football, and wings -- it doesn't get much better than that), all while raising money to help fund the Child Advocacy Center of America. This fall, we raised almost $6,000! Not only is raising money a fantastic thing about philanthropy events, but we also get a sweet pocket tee to go along with it. So, call me a sorority girl, but I'm going to take pride in it, along with almost every other sorority girl, because that is just simply amazing.
We have super fun sisterhood events.
In the midst of midterms and finals, we all need a break. Instead of simply going to dinner, we have fun events, such as Paint a Sister. This event is one of the many that we have throughout the semester, in which we are read a series of descriptions, such as, "someone who makes you feel at home," and you go up to a sister that makes you feel at home, and slap paint all over them. It's not only a way to be reminded that you matter and are appreciated, but it is a
My sorority relentlessly pursues instilling confidence in women.
If you know anything about Kappa Delta, I'm sure the word "confidence" comes to mind, and that is because it is part of our mission to instill confidence in every woman. In today's society, it is so common for women to tear other women down and make them feel inferior, for whatever reason. In the middle of that, Kappa Delta is persistent in making sure every woman, not just those within our circle, realize she is a strong and powerful woman with an immense amount of potential. We strive to ensure that every woman knows she is beautiful just they way she is. If you ask me, that's something powerful and amazing.
Homecoming Week is much more fun.
During Homecoming Week, there are many events going on, but the most popular would be Lip Sync and Step Show! If you've never attended these events, or never been involved in them, you need to be sure to take advantage of these fun events next homecoming! It is hard work to put together a show, and we start planning and practicing before the semester starts. This is such a fun way to get involved with homecoming, which comes only once a year! It's a wonderful experience to get to perform in front of the entire student body, all the while bonding with your sisters. Everyone enjoys dressing up in tutus and glitter to cheer on your sisters who have worked so hard to put the show together.
Big/Little Week
The concept of Big/Little is to find an older sister in the sorority that takes the new member under her wing and shows her what the true meaning of the sisterhood is. It is so fun because who she got as a big is supposed to be a surprise to the little. The older sister, then, gets to craft (glitter gets everywhere) and spoil the little anonymously all week, until the reveal -- when the trickery comes to an end, and all is right in the world.
I am pushed to seek each day the most honorable, beautiful, and highest.
As a sister of Kappa Delta Sorority, I am held to a higher standard. This isn't put in place to make us better than someone else, but to make us the best version of ourselves. I am pushed to maintain a certain GPA and to uphold a certain manner in which I carry myself. It is easy sometimes to sway from our values, but Kappa Delta is always there to remind me to stay true to myself and my values -- even when that is much easier said than done. We have banquets to reward us for keeping our grades up, and also as a reminder that we are important and that our hard work doesn't go unnoticed.
We have semi-formal and formal (just like prom).
I don't even think I need to go into great detail as to why this is just outstanding. I think we can all appreciate the fact that once we graduate high school and move off to college, we tend to miss high school. College can be stressful, and in the midst of all of that, it's such a relief to be able to get all dressed up, forget about all your stress and worries, and dance it out! Meredith Grey would approve, and that's enough for me.
My sisters are always true to me.
I do not pay for my friends. Don't even begin this whole, "you pay for your friends"
At the end of the day, these are just eight reasons I am a sorority girl, and proud of it. Greek life isn't for everyone, and that's okay; however, I have found the best version of myself through Kappa Delta. I am forever grateful for that, and I will always stand by Kappa Delta and what it brought me. So, try and tell me again that being a sorority girl is a bad thing.
