What it's like and debunking myths.

Being A Sorority Girl

Greek life is a mysterious life. "From the outside you don't understand, from the inside it's hard to explain." So, here's a glimpse into the world of a sorority girl.

1. "Oh, sorry. I can't hang out, I have sorority."

Between philanthropies, weekly Chapter meetings, sisterhoods, and everything in between, we're busy. That's not to mention that we're double-busy if we have a position in the house.

2. "This is my Little/Big. She's one of my sorority sisters."

It's worse when you've been Twined or Tripled (or even Quadrupled!) and people believe that you actually have a twin or are a triplet. Then you have to explain about sorority families.

3. "Oh, you're Greek?"

Is that a bad thing? Greek life has had a bad rep for a long time, but it's easy to see the bad things and ignore the good that we do. Greeks, on average, have a higher GPA average than non-Greeks because all of the houses have a minimum GPA requirement. If you don't make grades, there's a punishment for it. We also actively participate in philanthropies. Each Greek house has a national philanthropy (or several) and we also help other houses with their philanthropies. On top of that, we participate in our college's philanthropy events as well as community charities.

4. "Why do you guys always seem to match?"

With all of the events and activities that we do, we get cool shirts. #sorrynotsorry

5. "No, I can't go party with you, I'm dry."

There are times throughout the school year when we aren't allowed to drink. It varies with each house, but the big ones are during recruitment, Greek Week, and initiation times. We don't always party.

6. "No, I don't pay for my friends."

This is a common jab at Greek life, that we pay for our friends. If you ever paid dues for a club or a sport, then what's the difference? Yes, I do spend an enormous amount of money for a handful of great friends and some people who don't like me. I'm not being sarcastic at all.

7. "You don't look like a normal sorority girl."

How am I supposed to look? Am I supposed to look like Barbie? That's not reality. Sorority girls come in all shapes and sizes.

8. "No, I didn't get hazed."

No, we don't haze, either. It's against our policy and we can get into a lot of trouble for it. Not to mention that we don't like doing it. Why haze and humiliate girls who we think of as sisters?

9. "Yes, I hang out with other people."

I do have friends who aren't Greek. Just because I'm Greek, it doesn't mean that I don't hang out with people who aren't Greek.

10. "I love every Greek house."

No, I don't hate other houses just because I'm in my house. I may not like people in different houses, but we are all Greek. We stand together. We participate in each other's philanthropies, go to each other's social functions, and we hang out together. We often have good friends in other houses. We are Greek, so we stick together and stand up for each other, not tear each other down.

11. "Yes I am a sorority girl."

I wouldn't change it for the world.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
