Being A Senior In College Is Terrifying

The anxiety and horror of figuring your life out

So... it's been three years, no internships, not going for an MBA, grad school, or law school, and you have about 10 months to make a decision you thought you made in high school. Welcome to the world of the college senior who is petrified of what to do next. Do you go for your biggest dreams and ambitions or settle for what you think you can get? How do you do that, either of them? Then you realize that you've wasted so much time that you always felt that you never had enough of in the first place. Between the web surfing and goofing off, you have learned some things but you realize that you've just been going through the motions. You haven't prepared yourself aside from acing classes. In the world where everyone has a bachelor's and nobody is hiring, you don't know whether the steps you take will be worth it in the end or whether they were the rights ones to begin with. It's pretty heavy stuff I know but let me try to look at it more optimistically.

There are Career Services, organizations you can still join as a senior (I know it goes against your routine but maybe that's a good thing). Try to find internships during the school year between your capstone and your other responsibilities (sobs uncontrollably). Talk to your professors about new opportunities or advice, they've been out in the real world so listen to them. Networking is key! Improve your Linkedin, put up a professional picture of yourself. I mean, you're a social person, right? Aside from binging Netflix all weekend and being awkward around new people, you've managed to find friends so you should be great at networking, right? What else is there? I guess that's what I have to find out.

The moral of the story, folks, is that you don't have time. You have four years, which may seem like a lifetime, but they go by quickly. You think your career can take a back seat for your freshman year but then you do that until you're a junior and then you realize that it's a lot of work. You may be smart, organized, and filling lines on your resume but you need to be proactive. You need to go out and get it. Whatever your dreams or ambitions are you need more than the will you have to do the work. Don't ask me what that means exactly because I figure it's different for everyone. If you have two or more years left, just heed my advice and make sure you're prepared for it because it's your future. You can't wing it the morning of. I know this may seem like a bit of a downer but sometimes you have to get down to the nitty gritty and do the work. You've made it this far so I think you can find your path.

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
