Being considered "one of the guys" has its pros and cons. Think of the movie "She's the Man." Viola wore a wig and dressed like a guy just to play on the soccer team. She copied and acted like them just to keep her secret hidden. Except, she ended up falling head over heels for her roommate/teammate. I, on the other hand, do not dress like a guy but sometimes will act like one. I just enjoy hanging with the guys, knowing I'm always welcome and they have my back. They're like my brothers and I will defend them in any type of situation.
What's great about hanging out with guys is they're straight-forward about everything and I don't have to mask myself in front of them. If I need a guy's perspective on something, they're the ones I run to. I trust their input on certain situations and let them help me to see things more clearly. They don't sugar coat the truth. Sometimes, the truth might hurt, but I wouldn't want to hear it from anyone else. One rule when it comes to venting to guys is always expect brutal honesty. Also, expect blunt dating advice. I cried to them about my college break-up and they gave me reasons to believe I deserve better. They told me that guy was stupid to let a girl like me get away. No, they weren't just saying that to make me feel better. They meant it. The more I hang out with the guys, the better I see how they think. The same goes for them also. No matter what type of problems they're going through, I'm always going to be there for them. I love being straight-forward with a guy because he doesn't get too emotional when I tell him what needs to be heard. Having each other's backs is an important part of being one of the guys. They're your wing-man and you're their wing-woman.
When it to comes to parties and tailgates, hanging out with the guys is always a fun time. Sometimes the guys may forget that you're a girl, but that's not a problem. You get used to partying like one of them anyways. Some people do not understand the relationship between me and my guy friends. The guys are drama-free, they love to have a great time, and being with them makes you forget about all of the things you're worried about. Stressing about an exam you took earlier in the week won't be an option when you're around them.
There's a con when it comes to being one of the guys- there's that slight chance you could fall for one of them. No, I'm not saying I like one of them more than a friend. I'm being realistic. It happens in a friendship. A girl either falls for her guy best friend or vice versa. You're always hanging out together, so it's a possibility. At the same time, neither of you want to ruin the friendship you have. But don't worry about it. Just sit back, watch a football game and eat three boxes of pizza.
In the end, I'd like to thank the guys for being there for me, for always hearing me out and treating me like I'm one of them. Thank you for always reassuring me I'm a good person and talking me out of doing something stupid. Thank you for not sugar coating the truth and always being the guys I can run to. Most importantly, thank you for helping me become a better version of myself.
