We all have a best friend, maybe one, maybe two, or a whole group of them. If you're lucky you make some in college, whether it's through your sorority, a group you're a part of, or through your program of your major. For me, I do not go to school with any of my best friends, and it's heartbreaking. I was fortunate enough to gain friends through my sorority, and to be at school for two years with my other best friend until she graduated. And for some odd reason my other best friend and I decided to go to school 500 miles away from each other, and I will never know why. I transferred this past semester, and am at least 300-500 miles away from them all.
So what's it like being away from your other half? Let me tell you. It sucks, it really does. Being away from your best friends makes life a little bit harder. You can't text them and say "Hey come over," or "Hey wanna go shopping?" You simply count down the days until you can see them again, and only hope that being reunited will be sooner than the last one. When you're having a bad day, or just wanna break down and cry, you can't go over to their place and drown your sorrows in wine or ice cream. Sometimes texting, Face-Timing, and calling just isn't enough. Some days are easier than others. And honestly, sometimes it's hard to make friends because you know nobody will ever compare to your besties.
Even though being away from them sucks, it isn't all that bad.
You always have something to look forward to. Whether it's seeing them back home, or planning a trip to go stay with them in their town (always an excuse to travel!!!), you always know that when you're back together it's like you were never apart (but really). You always have something to say to them. Whether you are texting, or in person. You know there's never a dull moment because you haven't seen each other in so long that you have a lifetime to catch up on. You know you can always count on them even if they are a million miles away, because they are your best friend. Your family is just as excited to see them as you are. It's always nice seeing your best friend, and being able to see their family too knowing that you're just at home with their parents as you are with yours.
So to everyone who has best friends who are awesome like me, but have to suffer through long distance with them, just remember we're lucky to have such great friends who will always have our backs despite how many miles apart we are from them.
Here's to my best friends, y'all rock.
