Little sisters have a certain reputation. You know, they get all the attention, they get everything sooner than the older sister did, they have fewer rules, the list goes on.
While some of these things may be true, I love being the little sister for one specific reason: I have an older sister. And while older sisters have a certain reputation too, they're also the best kind of sister.
Even though she rolled her eyes at you and said she hated that you did it, she still let you copy everything she did. Whether it was the clothes you wore, the music you listened to or the sports you played, your older sister always let you copy her in the end. And because of it, you got to be just like her, which was always your dream.
Even though she gets annoyed when you ask so many questions, she is always there to give you advice and instruction. Need help on what classes to take in high school? Yep, your older sister's got you. Follow them to college and need help with... everything? Yep, your older sister's got you. Don't know what to say to a boy? Yep, your older sister's got you.
Even though you don't always tell her everything, when you do, she's all ears and all words of encouragement. You probably don't share your life with your older sister as much as you should, but when your heart is broken or your friends have betrayed you, she's the first person you go to. And it's obvious why -- she knows exactly what you need to make you feel better and she pours it onto you in copious amounts. Whether it be through words of affirmation or just ice cream, older sisters drop everything else to help you until they know you're doing okay.
Even though she gets upset when you don't want to hang out with her, she always will when you finally ask. When you finally get the freedom from your older sister and life is a little more exciting, you're really quick to have her be the last person on your list. However, when you feel like you need to do your duty as a sister or simply are tired of your friends, she's always available for you. And hanging out with her always reminds you you should do it a lot more often, too.
Even though you've annoyed her every day of your existence, she's still okay with being your best friend. Between sharing clothes, movie nights, rants over parents and bombarding into her room with gossip, it's questionable as to whether she's just considered an older sister or if she's really your best friend. Probably a little bit of both, but mostly the latter.
I may have received a few more gifts from family members and I may have gotten my first phone two years younger than you did, but it's only worth it because I get to have an older sister. I'm forever thankful for your unending support and love, even when I don't deserve it. I'm forever thankful for your example, even when I don't show it. And I'm forever thankful to have a maid of honor, best friend and older sister all in one.
