Best friends are very important. Growing up, I always thought you could only have one. Now I know I can have any amount. One of my very best friends is actually a girl. This article is going to touch on some of the things that happen when you're best friends with someone of the opposite gender (more specifically, a guy with a girl).
1. People always ask if you're dating.
The answer always starts off with a laugh. Could you honestly see yourself dating this person? No way! You see them all the time in their sweats while eating Buffalo Wild Wings. It's comfortable for you, so why add the stress of being in a relationship with this person?
2. You have a date to any function or can be a date to any function for her.
The amount of times I've needed a last minute date are innumerable. All I have to do is give my friend a call and she's there for me. On the flip side, I've been her date for several things. People at these functions know we're best friends and almost come to expect that we show up to functions together.
3. With these functions, you have to help each other get ready.
For the latest function my friend attended with me, we had to dress up. This friend of mine is notoriously late and couldn't decide what to wear. After rummaging through her closet for what felt like years for the "perfect outfit," I presented it to her with so much pride in myself. She said, "You can dress yourself but don't ever dress a girl... You just can't," and ever since then, I've given her all the time she needs.
4. You're the one she calls with "special projects."
I'm tall. Like really tall. The amount of times this friend of mine has called me to help her hang lights, pictures, paintings, or move furniture or other heavy things has been insane. Yet every single time, I'm there for her. Believe it or not, that's how we met freshman year. I was walking in the hallway of the dorm we lived in, and she asked me if I could help her hang some lights in her room because of how tall I was. And any time there is something she can help me with, she always does.
5. You drive almost anywhere together.
A lot of the times we try to take turns but when her car is involved, you end up driving it so she can focus on being the DJ. I like to drive anyway, so this isn't a big deal for me. In fact, I'd much rather drive than ride with her because sometimes, she's downright scary.
6. You get (and give) those random phone calls asking for rides.
To be completely honest, I give a lot more of these calls than I receive from her. I know my best friend stays up late and will always help me out if she's available. She's saved me several times just as I have saved her. We never judge, we just do it.
7. You're both always down for late night food runs.
It's usually when we've been in the library for hours on end. When I say we've been in the library, she's doing tons of work and I'm doing an assignment or two and staying to watch Netflix just to keep her company. Either way, when we're both done, Taco Bell is almost always the move.
8. You're always there for each other even when you're thousands of miles apart.
My best friend studied abroad last semester, which was tough for the both of us. We didn't get to see each other every day and when we tried to talk, we were in different time zones. Fortunately, we found a way to make sure we didn't lose touch. We would FaceTime for hours on end and talk all about how things were in the U.S and how things were abroad. I missed my best friend, but I was so happy when she came home.
I sincerely hope that you all have a best friend (or friends) like mine. They do a lot more for you than you realize, so make sure to never take them for granted! Your best friend will be there for you for the rest of your life. Make sure they know just how important they are to you!
