Many of us have grown up hearing that you can't always be in control and that life throws curveballs you just can't prepare for. We hear that being a control freak is a bad thing and we should go with the flow. Making plans is a waste of time because we don't actually know what's going to come next.
That's all true regarding so many areas in life. But there is one that requires our complete control. Without a grasp on it than our afternoons, days or weeks can be greatly affected.
Our emotions are not meant to lead us. They are not supposed to be a mysterious outside source of guidance. When we wake up each morning we shouldn't consult with our emotions to see what kind of day it will be. It is in our power to tell ourselves the kind of day we want to have.
No one can make you mad or force you to be upset. People create situations where we need to decide how we want to react. Our attitudes just reflect what we are thinking and when we allow ourselves to remain in a negative state of mind, then that moment will be less than satisfying. Your happiness isn't someone else's job.
First, you have to understand why you're feeling upset, depressed or irritated. After you can pinpoint the source, you can make steps to change your reaction and own your emotions.
Unfortunately, you're going to be in a bad mood and you're going to be faced with a circumstance that will cause confusion, pain or anger. That is why it's important to know what the problem is, what you're going to do in order to change your thoughts and eventually, in the end, your whole attitude.
It's your decision to let someone else's words or actions effect your peace.
Are you still hurting because of the past? Or overcome with anxiety about the future? Change your focus. The circumstance may not be in your control but your state of mind and reaction can be.
