Behind Her Smile

She is fighting a battle that you can't even imagine.

Behind Her Smile
Jessie Choinoski

She's the girl you run into at the coffee shop, and her smile lights up the whole room. There is something about her presence that fills you with life, warms your soul. You catch up with small talk and she tells you that she is good, that things are going well. You listen to her and believe her because she looks good, she seems fine. But the minute you walk away she lets out a sigh of relief... she was able to fool another person.

She's the girl whose laugh is so hearty it echoes across the Earth. It's the kind of laugh that is contagious, and you think everyone should hear. Her sense of humor is goofy and silly, she's able to mess around and find joy in the little things. You look at her and think she's happy. She is, but not completely. Her laugh is genuine, but there are things holding her down. She isn't completely herself, and she will never let you see that.

She's the girl who is passionate about everything she does. It's obvious that she puts her heart and soul into every aspect of her life. Whether this be her job, her school work or something as simple as reading a book. When you talk to her about something she loves you can see the passion in her eyes, and hear it with every word she says. These are the things that give her life because she is struggling to move forward. She has to let her passion show through to make you think she is doing okay.

She's the girl who you know to be strong. She is extremely aware of her struggles, and everything else around her. You've seen her conquer battles that you know you wouldn't be able to face. You've heard her story, and you know that she is creating her own path in life. You admire her strength because it seems as if she could rule the world. She is strong. Don't ever think otherwise, but her strength does not come easy. It takes everything she has to stand tall and face the hardships life keeps throwing at her.

She is the girl who always seems to be surrounded by friends. Her social media is full of her loved ones, and all the fun things she does with them. You see the adventures she goes on and how she is living her life to the fullest. You run into her at the mall, and she's with her BFF. You see her out for ice cream with a group, you see her enjoying the company of others. You see her with friends because when she is alone she hurts. She chooses to spend her time with others because it helps her forget, it's her coping mechanism.

She is the girl who knows her worth. She knows what she deserves and isn't afraid to go after it. You watch her fight for what she wants, and she has no problem doing so. She is honest when she is not getting what she needs or deserves. You respect her for this because it is something that takes most people years to do, and it's a skill she has mastered so soon. She is this way because she has felt worthless. Someone has knocked her down so low that she didn't even feel like a person, and since then, she has to fight for her existence. She has to fight for her worth.

You admire so many things about her, but you never really know what is going through her head. She will never show you or tell you the battles she is fighting because you can't help her. She is fighting her own inner demons and doesn't need anyone to look at her differently. So yes, she is the girl whose smile brightens the room, whose laugh is contagious and she is the girl who will fight for what she wants. But don't assume that she is happy. There is so much more behind her smile.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
