The film industry has made big bucks adapting young adult (YA) novels into films. Whether it be a franchise as iconic as "The Hunger Games" or one of John Green's stories, both young adults and others flock to the theaters for these kinds of movies. One movie hitting theaters later this year is "Before I Fall."
"Before I Fall" is a best-selling YA novel by Lauren Oliver, author of the popular dystopian series "Delirium" that is somewhat based on the film "Groundhog Day." In this case, the person reliving the same day over and over again is Samantha Kingston, a girl who has it all: popularity, a great boyfriend and inseparable best friends. However, the time loop forces her to re-evaluate her values and priorities.
The starring role of Samantha has gone to Zoey Deutch, who is known for portraying the lead in "Vampire Academy," another film based on a best-selling series of books. The rest of the cast consists of lesser known actors and actresses including Halston Sage, Logan Miller, Elena Kampouris and Kian Lawley. One familiar name is Diego Boneta, a handsome young actor who has appeared in "90210," "Pretty Little Liars" and "Scream Queens."
No release date has been announced yet, although filming ended on December 19, 2015. Filming took place in Squamish, British Columbia as well as Vancouver. It will be distributed by Fox 2000 Pictures (20th Century Fox). No trailer has been released as of yet.
Although the story takes place in high school, the themes are still relevant to college students. College might mean more maturity yet, young people, especially women, face peer pressure, bullying and problems living life to its fullest. This is personally one of my favorite YA books because Samantha Kingston not only shares my name but also discovers that there is more to life than popularity and that bullying has consequences. Not only does she become a better person but she also goes after what she truly wants without caring what other people think. Life should be lived to its fullest because you never know when it all might end or when it might be too late to change things.
Now is a good time to pick up the book before the movie hits theaters. Besides seeing updates on the film, reading the book is all one can do until then.
