Why We Cheer For Clark

Becoming The Superman
DC Comics

Boys, Girls, Sentient Bell Peppers. Life is short so I'll cut to the chase. Why do we cheer for the underdog? Why do we always want the "little guy" to win? It's really plain and simple. We've been told from young ages you CAN NOT do this. YOU CAN NOT do that. We want to fight the current do we not? To grow wings and soar when they tell us we can't fly. Grow flippers and swim when they us that we can't explore the ocean. To grow a smile and succeed when they told us we would fail. This world like to yell in our faces that we are not good enough; and we like to yell back "watch me."

How many times have you had what you thought was a great idea only to be shot down by someone who's opinion either meant a lot to you, or the idea itself meant a lot to you? We are used to being challenged on all cylinders that when we forget that it's time to walk into the proverbial shark tank; we become the food. We become what they want to feed on. The world loves to chew us up and spit us out. Yet we all cheer for the under dog at the edge of our seats, WHY? Well, because we see ourselves in them. Let's use the Karate Kid for an example. There is no way Daniel Son should have beaten the Kobra Kai Dojo. They had been trained for years while Danny only had what, a few months? Wax on wax off, paint house, beach montage, fight. We knew he wouldn't win. Shouldn't win. Couldn't win. He did. Small beacons of hope draw us back into the stadium. To watch Clark Kent become Superman and beat the bad guy. We all have the ability TO BECOME THE SUPERMAN.

At the end of the day, when we're laying bed. When you're juice has been drank, coloring books filled in. TV shows watched, comic books read. Push ups pushed, Sit ups sat. We sit and think of our small victories. All the little wins we should have lost. They start to add up. Then you think of your friends, family. They won a lot of battles they shouldn't have as well. It's hard to survive in this world when you're told to hold your ground when EVERYTHING is trying to pull you beneath the surface. So understand it's always an uphill battle. It's always a struggle. It's the struggle that makes the victories worth it. It's why we cheer for people like Clark, and Danny Russo, and Ted Mosby from how I met your mother. You know they're going to lose. Yet they always find a way to win. You always will find a way to win. Just trust that we are all cheering for YOUR underdog story. You have all the weapons. You need. Fight.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
