College is a time of change, one where many of us experience living with a roommate for the first time. This experience comes with a lot of firsts, such as sharing a bathroom or living space. You will live, eat, and sleep with the people whom you choose to live with, so choose wisely. Here's my advice: don't decide to room with your best friend.
Don't live with your best friend unless you are ready to be with them even more than you already are. Don't room with your best friend unless you are prepared for occasional bickering. Don't room with your best friend unless you know that you will be able handle being around them 24/7.
The decision to room with your best friend is a big one. However, I'm here to let you in on a secret. It's a great one. You don't know someone until you live with them. It's true.
I thought I knew my best friend pretty well before I decided to room with her, but I was wrong. I thought I knew how hard working and studious she is but I was wrong. I see her spend countless hours studying for exams, and she ends up doing exceptionally well. I always knew this about her, but to actually see the process in person is pretty amazing.
Living with your best friend will truly allow you to see how their mind and heart works. Each day I learn something new about my best friend. I see how her heart responds to different situations and pressures. Most times she handles things a lot different than I would, and that's what amazes me about her. In the mornings, she helps me pick out 90% of my outfits, and chooses what picture I should post on Instagram since I'm so indecisive.
Don't live with your best friend unless you are prepared to really get to know them better than you know yourself. It will happen. You will end up finishing their sentences, giving them a shoulder to cry on, encouraging them before exams, and they will become a part of you.
You will get on each other's nerves, and sometimes you may feel like your friendship is falling a part due to the stress of school or arguments that arise. That's perfectly normal.
Don't room with your best friend unless you're prepared to go on one of the greatest adventures of your life.
