Beyonce’s chart topping album, Lemonade, took the world by storm a little over 3 months ago and hasn’t slowed down since. The visual album is filled with a diverse range of songs that are all fantastic, but there is one in particular that caught the internet’s attention right away and has kept it for all of these months. “Sorry”, one of the album’s two singles, is a female anthem that is an album standout for the entirety of the song, but the one part that stood out to many was when Queen B hinted at her husband Jay Z’s infidelity with the line “he only want me when I’m not there / He better call Becky with the good hair.”
Upon hearing this, the internet went nuts. Who is Becky? What’s so great about her hair? Who could possibly be more perfect than Beyonce that he would cheat on her with? If a heavenly being like Beyonce can’t keep a man, how am I supposed to? Fingers were pointed in many directions as we all became seasoned detectives to try and find out who this Becky person was. The internet almost spontaneously combusted after hearing this song and the buzz about Becky still hasn’t stopped (though it has been dialed down a bit thanks to all of this Taylor Swift and Kimye drama).
After all this time, you’d think that the internet wouldn’t care anymore, but it still does. Luckily, we finally know the identity of Becky with the good hair. Hold onto your seats people because it is… nobody in particular! The writer of “Sorry” and this iconic line, Diana Gordon, spilled the beans to Entertainment Weekly in an exclusive interview last week by denouncing all of the sleuthing that the Beyhive has done since the song’s release. “What day in age from that lyric do you get all of this information? Is it really telling you all that much, accusing people?” was her response to all of this Becky drama. She has a point. Many people have gotten pretty crazy about this whole thing and have harassed the accused endlessly. The internet is a weird place and people tend to take things a little too far on there (ex. the #SaveMarinaJoyce hashtag). Gordon said that both her and Beyonce were not expecting such a huge response from that line, but they find it a little amusing that people got so caught up in it.
It may sound petty to say this, but I am slightly disappointed that this line wasn’t the biggest shade in history like we all thought it was. The twitter drama was pretty entertaining. However, I respect Beyonce’s privacy and artistic creativity. I still do believe that Becky with the good hair is probably a metaphor for something, but I’m not entirely sure what it is a metaphor for. Now that we know there is nothing to make a fuss about, please stop pointing fingers at people and acting crazy. We can all rest easy tonight knowing that there was no Becky with the good hair because we no longer have to spend our sleepless nights imaging a person out there with better hair than Beyonce. We can all take away a lesson from this story, and that is that nobody has better hair than Beyonce.
