I preface this article: you might not be happy with what I have to say. In fact, you may get really angry. I don't dislike Beyoncé by any means, I just don't get her anymore. I don't get why I should watch an hour of her visual album, or care about Becky and her hair. Before you comment or get angry though, I request that you hear me out first: read then rage.
So after the entire internet went crazy because of Beyoncé's promo video, I thought, "Alright, I guess I'll check this out." I wasn't exactly sure what I was watching, what she was doing or saying, and what this had to do with music, but everyone around me seemed to be excited. Now, I refuse to watch "Lemonade" because I've lost my hype for "Queen Bey" and here's why:
Let's go back a little bit, not even to Destiny's Child or any of Beyoncé's brief TV and movie cameos, but to 2008. Beyoncé released "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" and then in 2011 released "Run The World (Girls)." I was so about these songs that empowered women and exuded the positive feminist vibe we all need in our lives. This was the Beyoncé I could understand. This was the Beyoncé that got me, that was still just an awesome celebrity, who had the clear message with the good music.
Fast forward to 2013, and I'm already losing her. On her self-titled "Beyoncé" album was "Partition" which, at first, I enjoyed. That was until I actually read the lyrics, which reminded me of raunchier rap songs with lyrics like:
"Driver roll up the partition please
I don't need you seeing 'yonce on her knees"
And
"Handprints and footprints on my glass
Handprints and good grips all on my ass"
I can't bring myself to understandably connect those lyrics to her like I would someone like Nicki Minaj or Lil' Wayne.
And now, here we are in good ole' 2016 in a world where Beyoncé's security is probably better trained than the President's. She briefly appeared on stage at "Lip Sync Battle," guards in tow, and had to leave immediately after the song ended--unlike most celebs. She has honestly surpassed celeb status though, let's be real: to her more hardcore fans, Beyoncé is a goddess.
What sparked this article though had to be her Met Gala look. The internet is usually quick to rip apart a poorly dressed celebrity, and I honestly thought this time they wouldn't take exception to the Queen. However, much to my surprise, people praised Beyoncé for her latex, skin tone, 80's puffed, dress and, what was in my opinion, not the best makeup look. She's beautiful, don't get me wrong, but I didn't think her look that night was so flattering. Yet, 95% of my news feed was all about how amazing she looked, and that's what bothered me.
But let's get to my real problem here: "Lemonade." From what I've heard, the most key point that we're all taking from it is "Becky with the good hair" and her affair with Jay-Z. One of the first responses I heard was, "If Jay-Z cheated on Beyoncé, there's no hope for the rest of us." NO. Sorry, that's not how life works, yet people are flipping out about the strength of marriage, or lack thereof, because of one possible affair. And it's all because of who is involved. Now the "Bey Hive" as it's called is ready to pounce on whoever Becky is, evident in a sad piece of news I read this week.
Most of you are familiar with Rachael Ray, popular TV chef. Well, on this week's episode of internet stupidity, Beyoncé fans took to Instagram and started to attack Rachael in comments, threatening to never watch her show again. Why, you may ask? They confused her for suspect number one in the hunt for Becky, Rachel Roy--not okay folks, not at all. The fact that people are willing to threaten the wrong person (or even Roy for that matter) because of an affair that is still none of their business, because, I don't know, they feel protective of a celebrity who doesn't even know them, baffles me.
So, apologies again readers, I'm sorry I don't care anymore about who Adele has proclaimed as "Jesus Fucking Christ" and I'm sorry I don't feel like hurting Rachel Roy (or Ray) but this social cult that has formed around one of my once favorite singers has been lost on me. So no, I will not watch "Lemonade" and I don't really feel bad.
