Whether you are a singer, you play an instrument, you appreciate a good concert, or you enjoy singing and listening to the radio in your car with your friends, we all can agree that we love music. We love music, because the beauty that it has. The beauty of music is that you don’t have to be a musician to be able to appreciate music, all you need is an ear.
Growing up, my parents always had me and my siblings watch Disney movies. My parents loved Disney, and thought we needed to know the classics. My oldest sister memorized all of the lyrics to almost every single Disney song, and to this day they remain memorized. As we become older, our enjoyment of music turned into a love for music, and we began to expand our music horizons. And even though we are no longer children, we still enjoy watching Disney movies from time to time.
My older sister attended an arts middle school, where she participated in musicals, choir, and developed her appreciation for music. She began to play the the piano at a young age, and took private lessons for many years. My older brother participated in choir for a few years, decided it wasn't his favorite, but never gave up on music. He then went on to teach himself how to play the guitar, and can create random melodies up on the spot. My younger sister participated in choir for many years, and she also participated in our church worship team. She has the purest voice, and has the ability to hit notes you wouldn’t think possible. My youngest brother never participated in any of these activities, but that doesn't stop him from always singing and listening to music on the computer in our family kitchen. Lastly, me, I've also participate in my share of music activities… I’ve participated in various school choirs, musicals, worship team, and I listen to Pandora almost everyday.
Our family home is always overflowing with music. We listen to music, we dance to music, and we create music. We aren't the greatest, we sometimes are off key, we spend half of the time trying to find a song to sing, but whether we are all gathered around the piano, or the guitar, we always enjoy making music together.
Music, and the people that create it, have always been an inspiration to me. I love being able to walk into a room filled with music. I love the way music can tell a story. I love being able to make music and appreciate others creations. To me, it is important to enjoy the product of making music, but also the process. But not only is it important to enjoy these things, but to always remember that music is meant to be shared. Music isn’t about seeing who is the better musician, but being able to share what you have created, and given, with others.
These are the things I believe music to be, and that which I have learned about music over the years.
Music brings people together, filling homes with joy and moving people to feel, it brings a sense of peace, conveying messages and creating beauty along the way.
So for those reading, I hope you appreciate music, and if you don’t, I hope you find it in your heart to let music move you a little.
Music, I am thankful for what you have taught me, and the joy you have brought to my family.
Life wouldn’t be the same without you, because…
“Without music, life would be a mistake.”
Friedrich Nietzsche.
