To the person who feels they are not good enough,
Sometimes, or maybe all the time, we feel that we are not beautiful, smart or even loved. We feel no confidence in ourselves—that sadly, that is the truth, no matter how many times our friends and families tell us different. We just don't see what they see. How can they feel so good about themselves?
There are many ways to change the negativity we feel about ourselves, yet it can only be done if we believe it so and we go for it, because nothing is ever done if we do not take that first step. My mom once told me to look in the mirror, to look at myself, and then she said every morning or even during the day I should look at myself in the mirror and say, "My name is Miriam Concepcion and I am beautiful, I am smart, I am loved and I will succeed in life. I will be whatever I desire to be."
It felt weird, to be honest. I felt hesitant to do it, yet I began to do this ritual whenever I could. It was the moments where I just didn't feel good, I didn't feel fine, I felt lost. I wanted to show myself that I will be OK, that these moments of negativity will not overpower me. Sometimes it takes a while to feel positive about yourself.
We should never give up because giving up means the fight is over, that we will never come to anything, but that isn't true. It feels so easy to just give in and not to care, to keep yourself hidden, yet does it not hurt, do you not feel the negative thoughts harboring in your mind? The more we think of ourselves as this person that is useless, that is ugly and stupid, the more we believe in it. In the end, we want to look in that mirror and see what we really are, yet as of right now it's clouded because we see something we are not, we see all these problems with ourselves. We see things that we are missing.
For those who are still hesitant to do this little ritual because you feel that it won't change anything, why not try it? You can do many things, like a diary, poems, painting, anything that makes you feel good. Or even say your worries out loud, your fears and your feelings. The mind is a powerful thing and we can control it if only we do something. We are not meant to give up, we are meant to strive for happiness, to feel good. We are not brought into this life to only destroy ourselves. So next time you're home and you're ready to start the day, say hello to yourself.
