20 Non-Traditional Things For Which I'm Thankful
Irene Yi

It snowed for the first time this season today. I am currently typing and watching the snow fall in flurries outside my window. And it's a good thing that snow is finally upon us, too, because it doesn't feel like the holiday season without snow (no matter how much I blast Christmas music in October). As we enter a season of festivities, we also encounter much for which we are thankful. I am infinitely grateful for my family and friends on whom I can depend at any time. I am so blessed with a roof to live under. I am incredibly thankful for opportunities to pursue my interests and fill my brain with knowledge. However, I think that we sometimes overlook the smaller details, the finer things in life. Here are some things that I wouldn't usually think of when I make gratitude lists, but are nonetheless important to me:

1. Waking up in the middle of the night randomly and realizing I still have a few hours to sleep before I need to get up for zero hour.

2. A steamy cup of black coffee--not decaf, of course.

3. On occasion, a coffee-related drink from Starbucks that isn't black coffee. Like maybe a latte or caramel macchiato--that's when you know you're really treating yourself. :)

4. Speaking of Starbucks, their red holiday cups with pretty designs of the holidays.

5. The fact that 105.7 FM is playing Christmas music.

6. Laughing with my friends over how much we struggle in chemistry.

7. But still loving chemistry and learning about the wonders of the world.

8. Reading from my psychology textbook. Honestly, it's got to be one of my favorite textbooks of all time.

9. Drinking my pomegranate/blueberry/cinnamon tea every morning.

10. The rush of endorphins when I'm on a run.

11. The days that are sunny and warm--perfect weather to run.

12. But also, the days that are cold and maybe a little windy--also perfect weather to run.

13. Even the rainy days make an adventurous run.

14. Facing the fact that every day is just the perfect day for running. It's never not a great day to run.

15. Even after cross country season is over, wearing my apparel from the season... And seeing my teammates wear XC apparel in the hallways.

16. The fact that we've already learned so much of our competition numbers at dance.

17. Being able to end my Monday nights with a ballet class.

18. Having the people who work at Bliss and Vinegar know my usual order already. I probably go there way too much... oops.

19. Discovering new songs and getting all excited about them. It'll usually end up in me making a Spotify playlist and listening to it on repeat for hours while I do my homework.

20. Listing the things I'm grateful for, and realizing that I'll never be able to finish the list because there are an infinite number of things that I could say.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
