Be Thankful

"Bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character and the quality of my life. I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain and treasure the most precious gift I have—life itself.” ~ Walter Anderson

Thanksgiving is the day most, if not all, of us gather around the table with our families and those we hold dear, to give thanks for all that we are given. Some of these possessions or aspects in life that we list off pop right off the top of our heads, while those others require a little bit more time to think of. While I have more aspects of my life I find myself being immensely grateful for, I know there are going to be a numerous amount of articles with those lists in them. Instead of giving you a list of items, people, or qualities of my life I am thankful for, I thought I would give you a couple reasons as to why I believe it is quite important to take any amount of time out of your day to truly be thankful for whatever your list may consist of.

Positivity

In a world as negative and pessimistic as the one we live in now, positivity is crucial for a good person. Nobody wants to be around somebody who is always complaining about the same ole, same ole, and especially when this person shows no drive to change whatever he/she is complaining about. We all know at least one person we just want to say, "Then why don't you go change (insert problem here) instead of bringing my day down about it?" No matter if it's a four-square meal, or just a day with your family, positivity will never fail to ensure you're thankful for either one.

Humility

Being thankful for the smallest things in your life is instant humility. Not being greedy, and maybe even taking less than you think you deserve can be taken so far in life. Greed eats away at the goodness of people these days, and it is imperative we take a look at the smallest things in life that may amount to exponential greatness without a thought. Like the great Tim McGraw has sang to us, "Always stay humble and kind."

You are on this world for a reason, whether you believe that or not. You are still taking breaths one way or another, whether you know why or not. You weren't put on this world to be rude, greedy, negative, or a bad person. When you're at home with your families or if you're not so lucky, take even just a minute out of your day to list the things you are thankful, big and small. Once you sit down and truly look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now, life will already start to look so much brighter to you.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
