"It's fall...the basic white girls are coming." - This is something I actually heard come out of a male student's mouth.
After I heard this "joke" being uttered, I looked down at my boots, knee high socks, jeans, sweater with matching scarf, and the White Chocolate Mocha Starbucks coffee in my hand. Horrified, I thought to myself, I'm a basic white girl! This thought was quickly followed by, Wait...why do I care?
Why should I feel ashamed for how I am comfortable? Why should I feel bad that on cold days, I like to have a hot cup of coffee? Why should I feel bad or "basic" about the clothes I choose to wear, which makes me feel comfortable?
I LIKE being what is known as a "basic white girl." When I hear the phrase "basic white girl," I think of a girl that might not be all that smart. There is this sexist stigma that seems to follow white women around. That all we worry about is how we look, our iPhone selfies, and getting our morning dose of caffeine.
From all the girls I know that fit this "basic white girl" stereotype, we are actually people who could change the world. These "basic" girls I know are smart. They are determined. They are organized, cunning, and have the potential to be incredibly powerful. Us "basic white girls" are political science majors, physics majors, nursing majors, and more. We are going to be entering tough job fields with our 4.0s and college degrees in one hand and our pumpkin spice lattes in the other.
So yeah, i'm pretty okay with being a "basic white girl." Now excuse me, i'm off to get my Starbucks.
