Have you ever gone on a vacation and seen the tall stand filled with mugs with everyone’s name except yours? Yeah, I can relate. Always had to spell out your name for someone and they still misspell it? Yeah, I can definitely relate to that. Ever went to Starbucks and they basically ruined your name to the point it sounds nothing like yours? We can all relate.
My name is Alivia and you can guess I have been called Olivia, Oliver, A liver, and everything under the sun except my actual name. Yes the name Alivia and Olivia have two totally different pronunciations. I’ve always had to add a small dash to the bottom of an O to make my Starbucks drinks have MY name on it or even on cards I would receive. I would even receive cards on my birthday from people who I thought were close to me but I still find myself sitting with a card for “Olivia” on my birthday. Whenever I have to type a document, Word always autocorrects my name to Alicia or Olivia. Not only do people tell me my name is wrong but Word and my iPhone do too. The first thing I will tell you when I meet you is how to spell my name and what I would like to be called. Shout out to all those with names that people get stuck on because it’s spelt differently.
People with unique names have to deal with those teachers and professors who pause when they see their name appear on their roster. Rather than trying to say the name, they call them by their last name or butcher their first name. It's cool to see basic names transform into unique ones by the way their are spelled. Whether it's an added l or vowel change, I love it. Whether you're named after an old president or month in the calendar, embrace it. I enjoy seeing names that aren't basic. Don't let people make fun of your name because it's "different." Let those people talk because at the end of the day, some will compliment how it sounds and how it's spelt. Embrace the uniqueness of your name, be different! Embrace who you are and don't let society tell you that your name is spelt wrong, tell them it's okay to be different. To all the Nicks, Rebeccas, Taylors, Alyssas, Johns and Nicoles, this post isn't made for you. You guys don't understand our struggle.
This post is for those with unique names that deal with these issues on a daily basis. The ones who have to create a nickname so people won't have to constantly ask how it's pronounce. I appreciate and admire all of the uniquely named people in the world, you guys are rad. The people with normal basic names are just jealous of how unique we are.
