Meet Barnard College's Odyssey Staff

Welcome to Odyssey!

Odyssey has made the journey from Indiana University to over 250 college campuses nationwide to finally arrive here at Barnard College! With an average of 100,000 reads per campus and eight plus million reads per month nationally, Odyssey is the perfect platform for all bold, beautiful Barnard women to have their voices heard, regarding topics that matter most to them!

While I'm so excited to be Editor-in-Chief of Odyssey at Barnard, the people who make the fantastically entertaining and informative articles that we all know and love are the staff writers, and they all deserve a huge shout-out for their amazing work this semester. In celebration of them, I invite you to get to know each of our staff writers by reviewing each of their impressive profiles.

And, if you're interested in joining the team, the Barnard chapter of Odyssey is proud to announce that we are accepting applications to expand our staff! Barnard students of all majors, identities, interests and viewpoints are welcome to apply, by filling out this short form. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Meet the Staff:

Raisa Alam

Raisa is a sophomore hoping to get more involved in the college community after spending her freshman year holed up in the library establishing her academic footing. She is an avid reader, music fanatic and television addict. Still, she certainly feels passionate about relevant, current social issues and she hopes to be able to resonate with other millennials through her writing.

Sophia Bannister

Sophia is an incoming first-year interested in psychology, writing, Spanish, and acting. She plans to get involved with student theatre, and possibly try improv for the first time this fall. Her dream job is to be a professional actor or a human rights lawyer, but for now she's focusing on living in the moment and enjoying all New York has to offer! She hopes to share a unique and thoughtful perspective with Odyssey readers.

Lillian Cohen

Lilly is a math major on the pre-med track. Most of her time in college is spent on problem sets, but she's always liked the idea of being able to write articles about subjects that she enjoys! Before diving into the world of medical school and all the training that follows, she wants to take a year off to travel, learn new languages, and have new experiences.

Briana Draguca

Briana is a sophomore majoring in Psychology. She is the historian and one of the founding member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority’s Iota chapter, and is a member of the Barnard Babysitting Agency. She has always been interested in journalism, specifically concerning fashion, entertainment, and pop culture news. She has explored her interests by interning at InStyle Magazine over the summer and is currently interning at CollegeFashionista this fall semester. She is also on the writing staff of the Barnard Bulletin, a lifestyle magazine where she covers health, style and NYC lifestyle. Her dream is to become a senior editor of a fashion magazine, working closely with social media and the entertainment news department. She is so excited to start off her sophomore year with another journalism project on her hands thanks to Odyssey, and she can’t wait to share what she’s interested in to all of Barnard.

Ella Koscher

After living in Columbus, Ohio for 18 years of her life, Ella is a first-year at Barnard College, making NYC her second home. She's a coffee addict and bookworm who loves to travel and has been to 47 U.S. states and six countries including Ireland and Ethiopia. She enjoys writing, listening to music, eating, and napping.

Alondra Lucero

Alondra is a first-year student at Barnard College and is from Queens, N.Y. She is still undecided as to what she wants to major in, but is thinking of an economics major. She has two cats at home, is a proud New Yorker and loves to be around with her closest friends. As a writer for Odyssey, she hopes to inspire other young women of color to follow their passion and become a voice for young people from underrepresented communities.

Meaghan Marohn

Meaghan Marohn is a sophomore at Barnard College studying biology and anthropology. On campus, she's involved with Orchesis (a dance group on campus) and the sorority Alpha Chi Omega, working to get more involved in the philanthropy committee. She's also working as a biology lab TA and a lab assistant this semester. This is her first time ever writing for a major publication and she's enjoying every minute of it! She's always written creatively in her free time, making up stories and poems, so it’s been a learning experience to write more editorially. Mostly she'll be writing op-ed-like pieces expressing ideas on major issues in society to get people thinking. She wants her articles to be interesting and fun, so she hopes the readers will think that they are too!

Maritza Massol

Martiza is a huge sports fan, political debater, puppy lover (especially of her dog Charlie), and concert attendee. She plans to double major in sociology and political science.

Talisa Ramos

Talisa is an NYC girl born and raised. She loves dogs and has a quirky black lab mix of her own. Her favorite activities include: sleeping in, hanging with friends, binge-watching Netflix, and of course, writing for Odyssey. She tries to live her life as a balance between those things that she knows that she enjoys, like writing, and pushing herself past her known limits, as with the Eleanor Roosevelt quote: "you must do the things you think you cannot do." When she's not in class, you can probably find her with a snack scrolling through a fashion or design Instagram.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
