Over the years, Barbie has been criticized for the unrealistic body standards she was creating.
Some of the most unrealistic aspects of the Barbie doll included the unhealthily thin waist and incredibly long legs. Although many people were unhappy that the dolls were not more realistic, Hasbro has waited until now to change the anatomy of the famous doll into many more realistic proportions.
While Hasbro was being badgered by unhappy users of the trademark Barbie Dolls, there were many women that loved the body proportions so much that they underwent numerous cosmetic surgeries just to look like her. These many surgeries cost around $100,000, or more.
Although Hasbro did not sponsor or support this in any way, many people find that the unrealistic body images of Barbie caused a Ukranian woman to take such extreme measures to look like her "idol." Valeria Lukyanova, a young, Ukranian woman, decided that idolizing Barbie's perfect body was not good enough, and that it did not truly allow her to be like her idol. Lukyanova spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on cosmetic surgeries to make herself look like Barbie, thin waist and all. She is not the only one unhappy enough with their bodies to do this to themselves though, with many other young women willing to do the same just to improve their bodies.
Barbie is now offering a multitude of new dolls, including Curvy, Petite, and Tall, each in many races. This update of the dolls now allows children to pick which one they like the most, or which one defines them the best. The new additions to the collection allow girls to find dolls that identify themselves more closely than making themselves uncomfortable with their own bodies. As well as being more accurate to majority of the body types of young women and girls that buy these dolls, they come with many different clothing styles to suit all tastes. These clothing options fit more of the current trends in style as well as offering alternate clothing choices.
I believe that with these updates, not only has Hasbro begun to encourage girls to be happy with themselves, but to be more confident in themselves and their bodies, regardless of the appearance. Overall the update to the classic line of model-esque dolls serves as both a public refresher and as a boost to the self confidence of many young girls around the world.
The new Barbie collection provides more realistic ideals to shoppers, as well as a higher success rate for what parents would like to buy for their children.
