Barbie's "You can be anything" slogan is really being put on the forefront with Mattel's latest move in Barbie designs.
Barbie was first created to be a “teenage fashion model.” But, in later years as these young girls grew up, they began to realize that they did not look as pretty as Barbie. They realized they did not have the same proportions as Barbie. This had the influence to make some of them feel self conscious, which in cases led to eating disorders among young girls.
Imagine seeing a woman with the body proportions of, 39” 18” 33” she’s 5’9” and wears a size three shoe. That is horrifying to even think about. Not only would she not be able to stand up alone, she would not even look human. So why put this beauty ideal into the minds of young girls? That’s exactly what people began asking Mattel Inc.
Growing up, I never thought deeper about Barbie. All I was worried about was whether or not Barbie had all her accessories and looked pretty once I clothed her. I never once thought that I should strive to look like Barbie or that she was the epitome of feminine beauty. Barbie was just a doll; that was it.
If you ask me, we should all just listen to our friend Sir'Mix'A'Lot... "36 24 36 haha only if she's 5'3"
Now, you may be wondering, “why do I care about some stupid doll I played with when I was young?” Well, I’m here to tell you. Barbie was first launched in March of 1959, when an American businesswoman Ruth Handler created the Barbie doll for her daughter after drawing with a German doll called Bild Lilli as her inspiration.
Barbie has done it all, from a fashion model to a veterinarian and everything in between. Yet, over past years Barbie has been under scrutiny because of her un- human like proportions. She was giving young girls a false sense of reality and seemed to be body-shaming girls subconsciously. However, in the past year Barbie has expanded her resume and her body type. In fact, in Summer of 2016 Barbie is all signed up to be a “Game Developer,” “Vice President,” and “President.”
Barbie, the best selling doll since she was created 57 years ago, now also comes in all different body types including curvy, tall and petite. In fact, on their website the people behind Barbie say “Girls everywhere now have infinitely more ways to play out their stories and spark their imaginations through Barbie. Along with more overall diversity, we proudly add three new body types to our line.”
Now, of course there are still people out there who will always think of Barbie in a negative way. But I think that she's growing and changing. In fact, I think Barbie is more hip with the times than I am.
