Back To School Told Through Classic '80s Movies

It's that time of year again.

And it's officially the start of back to school season. It's one of the most bittersweet times in our lives. Positive because you get to see all your friends after going months without spending every day together. But negative because you are once again officially broke, you have to actually get your life together, and studying/having mental breakdowns are once more something you just can't live without.

1. Handling everything all at once. ("Ferris Bueller's Day Off," 1986)

Let's be honest, a lot is kind of thrown at us college students. With handling schoolwork, trying to call your parents, and figuring your life out to make sure your future is actually going to be in your favor... It's extremely stressful. Especially seeing how the start of back to school is one of those times where you just have to stay organized to prevent emotional breakdowns. But you can do it, STAY STRONG.

2. Having a class with the cutest guy to ever walk on campus. ("Sixteen Candles," 1984)

The most thrilling moment is when you walk into a new class and your eyes just land on him. He's the most beautiful man you've ever seen yet you can't sit next to him because your feet take you to the opposite side of the classroom. Now throughout the entire course, all you're every going to be doing is looking at him instead of learning and questioning yourself if you even want to go and say hi.

3. The energy to actually go to an 8:50 class. ("Pretty In Pink," 1986)

We've all been there, we've all had to set an alarm before 8 am to get up and get ready for class. And as you lay there in bed, trying your hardest not to cry, you wonder if you actually want to get up and go to class. Is it even worth it? Should I just take the F in the class? My bed is too comfy to move. Literally, it's a constant battle.

4. Realizing your childhood is basically over. ("The Breakfast Club," 1985)

After being at home and being treated like a pampered guest by your parents you get back to campus and you realize that you're back to taking care of yourself and back to the world of adulting. It's honestly one of the saddest realizations you could possibly ever have.

5. Having to be the one to motivate your friends to actually try this year. ("The Goonies," 1985)

The lack of motivation is starting to pick up after the first week of school. Before classes started your friends had a plan, they wanted to make Deans List and actually rock this year. How many times have you had to give the motivational speech?

6. When your friends want to go out. ("Stand By Me," 1986)

It's a Friday night and your friends and roommates all want to have a girls night out. How many times have you said no and they just don't take it for an answer? A lot. You get the entire speech about how you're only young once and how you have to enjoy college while you can. More than half the time their speech ends up working.

7. That moment you really need money. ("License To Drive," 1988)

Admit it, you thought working your ass off all summer would make sure to keep you pretty stable for a few months but then when you actually get back to campus and all settled down, your bank account is practically laughing at you. We've all been there, WE'RE ALL BROKE. But then you remember that mom and dad are just one phone call away and how can they say no to a perfect child like you??

College has its ups and downs. I won't lie. Some days are harder than others and some days the professors make your entire day by just letting a class out 30 minutes early. But hey, it's the best time of our lives and we have the world in our hands. That's pretty cool if you ask me. Maybe this year won't be as bad as you thought.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
