I don't exactly like one particular genre of music. My taste in music is solely based on the fact if the song has a good beat to it. I don't necessarily care about lyrics, I don't care if you had a girlfriend and she broke your heart and then proceeded to steal your dog. I'm looking at you country music stars. Sure I have favorite artists, but I don't buy their albums. The only exception is if I like either half of the songs or the entire album, which is usually never.
Then came Avicii.
I've always liked his songs, with the exception of "Levels" because it was severely overplayed. My favorite song of his was always "Hey Brother," and most of that was because the music video made me cry. Like more tears than school causes, and that's a lot. Then there was his hiatus. Now everyone goes on these, but then the artist(s) never really come back (Black Eyed Peas). Seriously, this boy just dropped off the face of the earth.
Then he comes back like a phoenix rising from its very own dead ashes like the boss he is.
He decided to release his own remix of Nina Simone's "Feeling Good," and absolutely destroys it (in a good way of course). I've never felt so strongly of a song until I heard this. First, I cried (normal for me), then I belted it like the pop diva that I am in the shower. I was "Feeling Good" about myself, until my brother told me to shut the hell up. Like excuse him.
Just when I thought he couldn't do more he releases "Waiting for Love," and his album "Stories." Just set me on fire why don't you.
I actually bought the album, all $10 of it. Every single song from his enigma of a man is legendary. Let me break it down for you all:
1.) Talk to Myself
It starts out a little slow for my liking, but then it picks up to this lively beat that makes you feel like you are dancing in the Amazon Rainforest. Magical is all I can say. It made me think that I wasn't the biggest white girl ever and that I could actually dance down the streets of Los Angeles.
2.) Touch Me
Slay, absolutely slay. It kind of makes me think of London for some reason. The music in the UK is either a hit or miss, but the beat in this song reminds me of something that Kiesza could make. Absolutely fabulous nonetheless.
3.) Ten More Days
Dear lord Jesus take the wheel. Not only does it have a chill beat to it but it features Bon Jovi. Unless you live under a rock, Bon Jovi is by far one of the greatest artists to ever grace this planet. Not only is he from my homeland but he absolutely kills the vocals. KILLS IT, GOD.
4.) For a Better Day
This is a very upbeat song, considering the music video is rather violent and aggressive. I'm not complaining though. The piano really makes this song, almost making me feel like it could be in a show set in New York.
5.) Broken Arrows
Not to be confused with the worst movie ever made "Crooked Arrows," this song features country music star Zac Brown. If anything it feels like a celebration of something, almost like you over came something in your life. It could be anything from a sickness or finding your dog that your girlfriend stole.
6.) True Believer
I will admit that this isn't my favorite song on the track, but it is good nonetheless. It has that "I just turned 21 and I'm going to hit up every club in Los Angeles" kind of vibe. It beat does sound a lot like "Hey Brother," which I'm assuming at this point is his signature.
7.) City Lights
Again, kind of boring and weird, but this time I feel like I'm in H&M or some weird Japanese TV show.
8.) Pure Grinding
Play this at my funeral. Just, this is too good to be true. I heard it at a field hockey game one time and I just stood there, contemplating how boring my life was before this song. It makes you want to be Rocky and just training all. Day. Long. It is the best pump up song, plus the music video just hits you in the feels.
9.) Sunset Jesus
It has a 90s or early 2000's vibe at the beginning, and definitely sounds like "Sweet Home Alabama." It kinda makes me want to visit California, but then I realize I'm East Coast.
10.) Can't Catch Me
Best chillout song ever. It has that Caribbean vibe, or something that Snoop Lion would pull out nowadays. If you are one of those people who likes to whip out your bath towel and lie in the middle of the front lawn of your campus, then this is the song for you.
11.) Somewhere in Stockholm
The man is from Sweden, don't be surprised. That would be stupid. The vibe of this song is like if J Cole and the Beetles (Sgt. Pepper specifically) had a love child. It's a catchy beat that will totally get your day going.
12.) Trouble
Probably the most country song I've ever heard from an EDM artist ever. Then again, that is Avicii's signature if you are familiar with him. Regardless, I am from Kentucky and therefore I enjoy it.
13.) Gonna Love Ya
Something about California and having a song that sounds like it belongs in Pac Sun must really inspire Avicii. Come on man, not everyone is from there but I see you. It's one of those chill out vibes that you would definitely listen to as you're driving down the road and there's just fields. So Indiana basically.
The best thing about Avicii's new album is that it tells a story, thus the name of it being "Stories." With that said, that is the point of his music videos. Whoever does direct those honestly has been doing a good job. The album also proves that all of the best EDM artists only come from Europe, and only over there.
