I don’t know what your schedule is or if you are involved in the ministry or if you rely on yourself to study the word of God. You might even have a group of friends that keep you accountable, by making sure you read the word and live by it.
I don’t know if you are the type of person that can walk up to a stranger and talk about God. You might be one of those people who would like people to ask you about Him, instead of you bringing Him up. You see, I always thought this was a bad quality about me. I cannot and never have been able to start a conversation with a stranger about the Lord, unless it was defending His name after a nasty remark was made that I personally thought was wrong. I have talked about Him with my friends, my family, and some acquaintances openly. Even on a couple of dates I have asked what the man thinks about God, after getting on the topic of our views on religion and politics. That’s about the closest to a stranger it gets.
It’s easier for me to talk to people who already believe in God. This is not challenging unless you find a person who is from a different denomination who simply believes in things a tad bit different than you do. I find it quite easy to see the sweet spirit in people who have God in their hearts. My point here is that it’s easy for me to talk to people when I can tell they already love God as much as Jesus loved everyone that he died for. I can start that conversation up when I know we will bond and get pretty deep into it.
I’m asking the readers this question: what would you say to a nonbeliever if they straight up asked?
I’ve been in this position once in my life. Pretty recently this happened, too. It was one of my closest friends whose life was just always a little bit off the wagon. It broke my heart to see someone who I will always hold dear to my heart be put in these situations where everyone around him is ruining their lives. I was afraid and still am afraid that he might give up and just accept that this is how life is going to be. No one in my life could ever understand why I have so much faith in this person. I couldn’t tell you why either, other than it’s a God thing. I believe he was put in my life so I can talk to him about God. Maybe he will turn his life around and maybe he won’t. He listens and lets me talk about God, and that is a really great situation to be in with a nonbeliever.
So, again I ask, what would you say to a nonbeliever if they walked right up to you and said, “Could you tell me a little bit about God?”
I was at first going to make this a list, maybe tell the readers what I specifically said to my friend, but I thought that was just a bit wrong. There aren’t any specific things you have to say. You really have to use your heart and be honest.
What I would start with, if a nonbeliever asked me about God would be to tell him or her how I found God, because it’s really not a story anyone would expect to hear from me. I’m being vague here, but I would tell them how awful of a person I was once. How badly I treated people and how badly I got treated in return because of the low standards I had. I always had this feeling that there was something more in my life that I just couldn’t reach yet. It was like a puzzle piece of my life that was missing and it was satisfaction. I was bored, so I would go to what any loser high schooler would do. I couldn’t find any happiness no matter where I was. I wasn’t unhappy, I was just majorly bored. I would start conflict in my life because I didn’t know who to keep in it and who to kick out of it.
I knew God existed, but I didn’t really feel Him there at all. Until one day where I was sitting in a Planet Fitness parking lot, crying my eyes out and sitting on the ground at five in the morning because I didn’t know what to do about a person in my life that was involved in changing who I was into a person I didn’t recognize. I needed help and I asked for help, out loud and repeatedly, which is something that I don’t really do, ever. I was desperate for answers. By the time I woke up in the morning, it seemed like I had the answers I needed and the strength to let go of that pain. It was easy. This was one of those moments where I was in awe. I have lived my life with a different attitude since that day.
God knows when we need help before we even ask. He waits for you to cry out to him even if it isn’t out loud. It doesn’t have to be out loud. I used to write notes because I couldn’t pray out loud.
God knows we are struggling with all these temptations. Some think God is mad and bad and mean, but let me remind you with all the honesty I have inside me that is nothing but a lie. Bad things don’t happen because of God. God wants the best for all of us. I don’t mean money and gold. I don’t mean the best job and the most expensive items. I mean he wants you to be happy. He wants what you want. He knows where you are going and He can help guide you, but you need to ask for His help.
There is nothing God will put in your life that you can’t get through. I cannot stress enough how supportive He really is. Through the death of family members and the stress of college finals, He is there whenever you need Him. There is no line of who is more important and who needs Him the most. He is always willing to listen and to help.
