It's funny how people seem to think that bullying disappears once you reach adulthood. Nope. It just transforms into attacks that are much less visible. In our era of technology, hate and negativity spreads through our posts and feeds in abundance and people relish in such acts; sharing and chiming in with their own hateful comments. Acts of kindness are rare and true emotions are interpreted as weakness. We live in a world where reality television is more real to some than mental health problems are. Where people have to justify their race or religion in response to terrorist attacks. Where the scorned are those who speak up against injustice and the crazy ones are those who disagree with the status quo. Where we always have to pick a party, a winner, someone who is right. A world where talking about world issues or politics or religion is taboo and far too critical of others. We sit silent on rides to work or school, worrying over our own versions of the world. But condemn and ridicule others in the sanctuary of our homes. The older we get, the less love we have to give.
I always believed that being critical was a byproduct of growing up but in reality it is created through the environment that we live in. An environment that we have created for ourselves. An environment where everyone and everything is initially met with a negative response. So much that people have to think about posting and sharing their lives a hundred times over in order not to offend anyone or draw hate onto themselves. Just imagine how different and wonderful the world would be if our energies used for evil were instead used for peace, if each like meant another positive action, if each catastrophe brought us closer together. Because we don't see the people we direct our words towards, we forget that we are dealing with other humans who are going through the same daily struggles that we are going through.
We have more humans on this earth than ever before, but there is no humanity to be seen anywhere.
