As Another Chapter Closes ...

As we mark the passing of world events that happened seventy years ago, I felt that we as a community should rewind and take a look back into our history. This is our chance to give thanks to the men and women of our greatest generation with their "can-do attitudes" and service to others. We can only hope that national unity will continue to be strong and help inspire our future generations.

Gen. Claire Lee Chennault was born on Sept. 6, 1893 in Commerce, Texas but relocated and was raised in Gilbert, Louisiana. Growing up on the Louisiana bayou taught Chennault many things that he would later use while he was in the military. In 1919, Chennault earned his wings from the U.S. Army Air Corps. After retiring from the military and being ill for quite some time Chennault had an offer to go to China and help with their air force.

Gen. Chennault and the American Volunteer Group (AVG) destroyed around 300 enemy air crafts while only losing 12 of their own. This group would be known as the "Flying Tigers," and they were the very first AVG of the Chinese Air Force.

Under Chennault's command, the 14th Air Force

    • destroyed more than 2,600 enemy aircraft
    • sunk damaged 2,230,000 tons of enemy merchant vessels & 45 naval ships
    • killed more than 66,700 enemy troops

The 14th Air Force was the smallest and most remote air force in the history of WWII.

ULM gives respect and recognition to Gen. Chennault by renaming the "Indians" to what is now the "Warhawks." In WWII, the Air Force utilized the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk during combat and used Gen. Chennault's fighting tactics to help the pacific against the Japanese. The Warhawk was an American single-engine, single seat, all-metal fighter and ground attack aircraft that first flew in 1938 and was used by the Allied troops. Also during WWII, Monroe’s Selman Field was the nations largest aviation school. Gen. Chennault had made Monroe, LA his home, and his legacy is still here today.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
