I'm sure we can all think back to a time where someone has made a comment about our body, whether it was a good or bad. Artist Jojo Oldham decided to take these comments and make a statement out of them. She decided to take a white maxi dress and paint these comments onto it.
This is an amazing way to make a stand for body positivity. The words don't get under her skin anymore so she decided to wear them proudly. To some it may seem odd, I mean, she is wearing positive comments and negative comments alike. It was difficult for Oldham to build up her self confidence and this project is a way for her to help others build theirs up as well. As seen on the dress, there are positive comments such as "woah" and "stunning" that pop out in bright pink bubble letters next to comments like "be nice if you were a bit slimmer" and "yikes".
We all make assumptions about people based on how attractive we think they are, but we never realize how much our comments could affect that person.
While being interviewed Oldham had stated, "Like a lot of people, women especially, I‘ve beaten myself up for a lot of my life and I've been in this battle with my body to turn it into something that it’s not naturally. That’s not to say I don’t want to be the happiest, healthiest version of myself—because I definitely do—but I’ve become a hell of a lot happier since I stopped connecting health with my size and how certain parts of my body look."
She is raising awareness and making a point that somebody else's perception of you means nothing. As long as you love yourself and you are confident, whatever anyone else has to say is irrelevant. Her artwork is very well done and inspiring to young women everywhere.
