Rap artist Mac Miller was pronounced dead on the afternoon of Friday, September 7th.
The media blew up. Photos of Mac Miller lived all over Instagram feeds, fellow music artists wishing their condolensces, the story constanlty being followed on several media platforms.
The first thought in my head was Ariana.
And not in any way blaming her for this travesty, but instead the devastation she must feel.
Personally, I was never a huge Mac Miller fan. I enjoyed several songs he had but I'm not going to sit here and pretend I was this die-hard Mac Miller fan just because he's no longer with us.
When it comes down to it, Mac Miller needed help. He had admitted to it, too. In an interview with "Noisey" back in 2013, Miller admitted to his lean addiction, and decided to suddenly stop due to his new TV show. "F*ck, I'm gonna be on national TV, I'm a mess, I better put this cup away."
If only it stopped there. Maybe he'd still be here, trying to get clean. Or maybe he wouldn't. Maybe he'd be following down that same path and creating more damage to himself.
What bothers me the most about Miller's death is the fact people have the audacity to blame Ariana Grande.
Ariana Grande and Mac Miller broke up earlier this year after a two-year relationship. Fans were devastated, not expecting such a couple to ever end their love.
"It's the most heartbreaking thing happening in Hollywood," a twitter user, Elijah Fint, tweeted in May. Ariana immediately responded, defending herself and women across the world who have been in toxic relationships."how absurd that you minimize femal self-respect and self-worth by saying someone should stay in a toxic relatipnshipbecause he wrote an album about them...I have cared for him and tried to support his sobriety & prayed for his balance for years"
And now, about three months later, cowardly social media trolls hide behind their screens to harrass Ariana Grande with horrific comments and place Miller's death on her decision to leave him.
On Saturday afternoon, Ariana Grande broke her silence with a captionless photo of Mac Miller.
I hate this more than anything.
No woman should feel obligated to stay in a relationship no matter what.
"I am not a babysitter or a mother and no woman should feel that they need to be." Ariana preached.
It's time we stop romanticizing drug addictions. It's time we stop accepting toxic relationships.
Instead, it's time we get people the help they need, and realize the dangers of toxic relationships.
