College is all about making decisions that can and will affect you for the rest of your life. That very aspect can be very terrifying to many college students. One of the biggest choices you make in college is probably choosing your major. You are basically deciding what you are going to be doing career-wise for the rest of your working life. For people who have absolutely no idea what they want to do with their life career-wise, this aspect of college can be very stressful. How are a bunch of people who are fresh out of high school expected to choose their entire life's career? Well, I'm here to tell you that it is 100 percent OK to not know what career you want to pursue at the age of 18-22.
College has many purposes. One of them is described above; however, another purpose is to discover what you love to do. If you don't know what career you want to pursue, then don't worry. You have so much time to figure it all out. You can join clubs that you may think would be interesting, take classes that you think you have an interest in, and so much more to help you decide what it is that you are passionate about. Once you find out this passion, take that as your first step in deciding what it is you want your career path to be.
As a reminder, college is not just four years and then it is over. You can take more than five years if you need to. College isn't something you should rush through and then realize you regret your choice of major 10 years down the line because you hate what you are doing career-wise. When people say that it's OK if you don't have any idea about what you want your major to be, they are not lying. It really is OK. I'm going into my fifth semester, and I have changed my major more times than I can count, yet I still plan to graduate on time.
Now, I'm not saying you should constantly be changing your major, but I do believe you should see what is out there for you before you officially decide. You have so much time and so many resources in front of you while you are away at college, it would be stupid of you to not touch all of your bases before making a final decision on something that truly is life-changing. Declaring a major will take your life in a completely different direction; it's just best to make sure that you are 100 percent certain it's the path you want to go down.
