One night, I am sitting in the kitchen of my sorority house stumped on what to write for my article that week. Not knowing what to do, I take to the snack wall in search of something to satisfy me. That’s when I see them -- La Croix sparkling water cans sitting on the table. I have never had a La Croix drink before. Now, I had heard/known people who loved them. I had seen them praised on the Internet by people I didn’t know, and their cans held by models in glamour shots. People seemed to rave about them and say the drink now ran in their veins because it was better than their own blood.
As I stood there in the kitchen, I asked the girls around me if they liked them. Hardly any of them had tried them, but one said she didn’t like it when she had it. I was taken aback by that after seeing so many raves about them. So naturally, I had to try it. After convincing my friend to try one with me, we got to choose from the three varieties that were set out: Passionfruit, Pamplemousse, and Tangerine. We tried the Pamplemousse and the Tangerine. Now we both tasted our respective drinks, neither of us too thrilled by them. We switched to see if it was a flavor thing. It wasn’t. Neither of us liked them. After that, my friend and I asked every girl who walked into the kitchen to try a sip and tell us what they thought. Much to our surprise, none of the girls liked them. Absolutely zero.
A little bit later the girl who had left them in the kitchen came down to work on some homework. We asked why she had put them there, assuming it was because she wasn’t a fan of them at all. However; she told us that she liked them but not the flavors she had left in the kitchen. She preferred flavors like lemon or lime. These things normally go with water, so maybe that’s why she liked them.
Now as mentioned above, none of the girls who tried it liked it. However, we asked the people who came into the kitchen if the had had them, and the ones who hadn’t, we would make them try it. But there were some girls who came into the kitchen, and when asked if they had had them, they said, "yes." We asked their opinions, and the results were mixed. Only a couple girls we asked said they had had them and liked them, the rest said they’d had them but didn’t like them. So our next step was to ask the girls why they liked them. One said she just liked the sparkling aspect of it. Simple enough. The next said she enjoyed that it had no sugar but had enough of a soda aspect that she still felt like she was being unhealthy when she drank it. She said it was a good mix of water and soda. It was good for you but interesting to drink.
For me, this was an interesting social experiment. Being under the impression that everyone liked them, I found out that only a select few actually enjoyed them. It was very eye-opening. The La Croix advertisers are doing a fantastic job, so props to them.
