A Simple Thank You Isn't Enough

An Open Letter To My Best Friends' Parents
Jessie Brand

Dear Best Friends’ Parents,

Here is my attempt in thanking you, you know who you are, for always welcoming me with wide open arms. No matter the circumstance, no matter the time nor place, I know I can always count on you. You have been nothing but supportive towards me, as has your child has also been which is why I know they will always be my best friend. You raised your child to be understanding, comforting, caring, and overall a human being I couldn’t imagine my life without. Just know that without your child, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I wouldn’t have been here without them, so thank you and thank them for me the next time you see them.

Without your child, my life wouldn’t have been easy. The countless FaceTime sessions and group chats have kept me sane while I overthought every situation I was placed in. Thank you for raising your child to see the positives in others, and teaching them to remind their friends of their best qualities. I can’t even imagine where my level my self-esteem would be without them, but I know it would be nowhere near this high. There is no damage that could be done to me that they could not fix with a simple phone call or reminder of how awesome they think I am. Seriously, thank you for contributing such an amazing and caring person to this world. That seems so hard to find nowadays.

Thank you for giving me a place to go when I wanted to watch a movie with my best friend or even just a place to go when there seemed like there was nowhere else to turn. A big thank you for the snacks and countless meals you’ve provided me with. Thank you for buying me lunch, even though I had my debit card on me. Your simple acts of such unconditional love have made me so grateful for you. The way you treat me has only inspired me to treat others with this same unconditional love. Thank you for allowing our countless group sleepovers filled with overly loud laughs and gossip until the early hours of the morning. Also, thank you so much for the pictures you are always so willing to take on such important events, I mean seriously, our prom pictures were amazing thanks to you guys.

Not many adults have taken as much interest in my life as you guys have. Thank you for supporting my dreams and my decisions when it comes to school or work or anything. It feels so good to know you view me as an adult who can make their own educated choices. But also thank you for giving me your advice when I do make decisions because I look up to such accomplished adults like you.

I hope you know that all of this does not compare to what you do for me. I cannot put into words the unconditional love and support you provide me with that allows me to succeed in life. You and your child allow me to try new things and find out who I really am and I am so grateful for that. Thank you for everything, including my best friend.

Sincerely,

Your Child’s Best Friend (Basically Your Own Daughter)

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
