Should Valentine's Day even be celebrated? This is a loaded question that I know would spark some serious debate. But even being in a relationship, currently, I am still on board with the people that say no. I have never understood it. Call me bitter, but my relationship and I would be perfectly fine if this holiday was eliminated.
When I was single, I vividly remember this as the day when I would viciously roll my eyes at everyone and everything -- and even in relationship, I still do. You squad up with all of your other single friends and act like this is not the most annoying day of your life, and that you are totally fine with the single life. Even if you are happy with your single life, this day makes it a little bit harder to remain content. But don’t you fear, you are not missing out on anything. Here are some real thoughts on your standard Valentine's Day gifts.
Chocolate or candy. Spring break is coming -- you don’t want chocolate, anyway. Because I would eat the whole box in one sitting and regret it. Do you know how long you have to stay on the elliptical to work that off?
Wine. Love wine. But cheap wine sucks, and lord knows we are all on a budget, so unless you are going to get me something that will not give me a raging hangover on Feb. 15, I don’t really want it.
Teddy bears. Oh, wow, you got me a teddy bear the size of my body, that’s so sweet! Where the hell am I going to put this in my tiny apartment?
Flowers . Aw, he got you a dozen roses. How adorable! Now you have to bring them home, put them in a vase, and when they wilt you have to messily transfer them into a plastic bag so that you can walk all the way down the hallway and throw them in the smelly garbage chute. Ugh.
It is disappointing for everyone. Whether you are single or taken, this day is never that great. For all you single ladies out there, no one wants to be slapped in the face with the plentiful and obnoxious Instagram posts gushing with love and the reminder that you don’t have a Valentine. Luckily for you, all of the chocolate goes on sale the day after! And for anyone who is taken, you have this crazy idea in your head that Valentine's Day is going to be the sweetest day ever, when in reality society is forcing us to prove to each other how much we love one another. You should probably be doing that every day.
This holiday is just so limited to the people that can actually enjoy it, and it sets an unrealistic standard for everyone. People should not need a day of the year to make time to show the person that they love, that they care about them. And even if you totally disagree, and do get all of these cute gifts on your Valentine's Day, please save the rest of us all of the extensive eye rolling and don’t post it all over Instagram and Twitter because you are the only one who truly can appreciate and care about it.
