An Open Letter to My High School Friends

Dear friends from high school,

I want to begin by letting you know how much you all mean to me. When we met in freshman year, I had no idea how close we would become throughout our four years together. Some of you I instantly became friends with, and others we slowly became close. You are each unique and special to me for different reasons, and I would not trade that for anything.

High school isn't easy for anyone-- it's stressful and chaotic and a time where everything is constantly changing. We've all had our ups and downs; we've all been through good times and bad times. Despite everything that we've been through during our four years, the one constant was that we always had each other. I want to thank each of you for being there for me and I want to let you know that I will always be there for you, no matter how far apart we may be.

I think it's so amazing that we were all able to become so close to one another. We have been through everything together-- from the awkward conversations in freshman year, to the uneventful sophomore year, SATs and ACTs in junior year, all the way to the stressful college applications in senior year, and everything in between. You were my peers, my mentors, and the people who I worked with everyday. We came to know each other's strengths and weaknesses, and we learned how to work together to achieve our goals. We weren't just classmates, however. We understood each other in a way that cannot be described in words. We all shared a similar sense of humor. We all had the best times together. We shared similar interests and values. For those reasons, you are the best friends that I could ever ask for. There are so many qualities that I admire about each of you, and I know that I will never find friends like you again.

I hope you all know that you hold a special place in my heart. Yes, we are all making new friends and having new experiences now that we are all away at college, but I know that we will always remain as close as we were in high school. Even though we may not see each other everyday anymore, I promise that any distance will not change our relationship. No one will ever replace my high school friends-- you are all so special to me and our experiences together are unlike any others. Thank you for being a part of my life, and I hope that we will never grow apart. I love each of you with all of my heart.

Sincerely,

Clare

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
