What is floating through your mind right now? We're heading into a time never before experienced by this country. Some of you maybe unsure, frightened, and wondering how life will be impacted. I do not know down to the precise detail what all is about to take place, but I can give you a few things to keep in mind.
1. Respect
If you're a true American (regardless of which side of the isle you're from) you will reach to others in respect. It shouldn't matter who the person in your life is. During this election cycle, I went to see candidates Senator Bernie Sanders, VP candidate Tim Kaine, now president Donald Trump, and many of the other Republican candidates. I respected the candidates and attempted to look past any disagreements I had in order to hear their beliefs and plans for this country. That's not going to change just because the election is over. It is 100% legal to protest what Donald Trump might do. However, by destroying property you're shoving your beliefs on someone else saying it should be fixed. By hurting other people who had nothing to do with the election or politics in general, you're crossing a dangerous line. And neither is ok or even lawful. Imagine if things were flipped and someone you loved was injured because of the protest against something you believed in. Violence should never be the answer in this country. Remedy comes in unity, not becoming a monster yourself. Respect the election results and the leaders until proven otherwise.
2. Frequency
We all come from different places. We all have different goals. We all also believe in a country that has life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We are supposed to be on the same frequency. We all need to be able to hear each other. Instead of shutting each other out like many of us did this past year, let's wake up and let the voices be heard. Next time someone says someone you disagree with, don't shut them out. Let them finish their sentence and then make a reply based on your values instead of your emotion. If we can agree on something, then we can listen to ways to improve what's around us. Worry about the family before you worry about who wins the feud.
3. Moving Forward
Donald Trump took the oath of office. He's in the white house planning to work on healthcare, infrastructure, immigrant reform, and more. He's not some crazy, evil, racist businessman out to get you. He's a flawed man who has made mistakes, and yes, said some regrettable things. He's moving forward with the advice from people around him. Now it's our turn. Don't like what he's doing? Write him a letter. Call your congress representatives. I don't care if you're from North Dakota or California. I don't care if you like Donald Trump or you absolutely don't. Let's get involved and move forward. It might be hard for some right now, but we have to have be part of the solution. You can either let your empty complaints ricochet or you can step into the unknown, ready.
