As an outsider of New Jersey, I don't seem to understand much of what happens in this little Northern state. Here are some questions and other concerns that I, and all other outsiders, have about the Garden State.
1. What is the difference between North and South Jersey?
And why do people always let you know if they are from North or South? Is this Korea?
2. Is North Jersey really New York City, and is South Jersey really Philadelphia?
Where are these people actually from?
3. Does Central Jersey not exist?
If there is a North and South, shouldn’t there be a central? Why is there such a heated debate about its existence?
4. What even is a pork roll?
I imagine a pork roll to be a pig rolling down a hill, but apparently that, isn’t it. Is a pork roll the same thing as a Taylor Ham? What is this nonsense?
5. What is the difference between a hoagie and a sub?
Is there a difference in the size or shape? Can’t we just agree that they are all sandwiches?
5. How do you pronounce any of its cities' names?
Pequannock? Hackensack? Squankum? Ho-Ho-Kus? Are these even real words? And, of course, we can’t forget the city of Buttzville.
6. Why do people from New Jersey introduce themselves in such specific ways?
Why do we need to know what county you are from? How does telling me your nearest exist help me understand your hometown?
7. Does New Jersey really have the best bagels, pizza, and diners?
Is it really something in the water? What makes them so brag worthy that all New Jerseyans get so defensive about them?
8. Is the Jersey Turnpike an actual road or is it just a provocative dance move?
Do people drive on the turnpike, or only grind on it? Is Snooki the one to thank for this?
9. Do you all actually not pump your own gas?
Are you all royalty or something? How is it that everywhere else we have to pump our own gas rain or shine? Is that why you pump your fists, since you aren’t busy pumping gas?
