An Open Letter To Those Who Want To Ban Syrian Refugees
Humans of New York

I started out this piece by naming the states where Syrian refugees are now unwelcome. But then I realized that there are just too many to list, and in the wake of the tragic Paris incident, there are more and more government officials every day speaking out about how they will not allow for refugees to enter their territories.

I somewhat understand where you are coming from. You want to protect the residents of your state and keep them from harm’s way.

However, refusing to let Syrian refugees into your territory is not going to help. After all, they are trying to escape the same evil that the rest of us want to get rid of, right? So how is it right for us to leave them helpless with no way to fend for themselves?

I constantly see these arguments on social media about how we need to help Americans first. How there are people who are in need in our own country, and thus, people from other parts of the world are not our top priority right now. However, I beg to differ with this reasoning.

At a time where the whole world is mourning, at a time where we as humans need to protect each other, we need to come together for one another. With horrific acts of crime occurring not just on a daily, but on an hourly basis around the globe, this is the time for us to all unite and fight against the root cause(s) of all these incidents.

Regardless of nationality, race or religion, we should help those in need - and while I definitely agree that there are thousands of people in this country who need help, that is not a valid reason as to why we should not help refugees who are currently struggling each second to even keep themselves alive.

So please, restore my faith in humanity as I have none left at the moment. Restore my faith in humanity by helping those in need rather than shutting them out. Restore my faith in humanity by proving that there is still hope for us as a species. Show me that there is still good in the world, that not everyone is evil.

Sincerely,

A heart-broken human.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
