An appreciation to my sister

An Open Letter To The Sister I Miss
Annette Calvert

Growing up you are told that your siblings are going to be your best friends. It was hard to believe that when all we did was fight day after day. Even though doors were slammed and 'I hate you's' were said, that statement turned out to be true. Now you live in a different state, and I would do anything to have you back

To my sister,

Your senior year you took me under your wing. I was just a little freshman terrified of this new world called High School. You showed me the roots and never was embarrassed to says, "That's my sister!" I learned that being "Melissa Calvert's little sister" was not a bad thing. You were never too cool to hang out with your little sister and you don't know how much I loved it.

The year flew by, and it was time for you to move to college. All though you were only moving to the University of Nebraska-Omaha, it was tough having you 30 minutes away rather than right down the hall. I cried. There were times I needed you in the middle of the night, but didn't have you. Times mom and I weren't getting along, and you weren't there. I missed my best friend

Now you live 8 hours away, and I would kill for you to be 30 minutes away again. It has been four months since I have last seen you and I hate it. I miss all the sleepovers, late-night drives, and most importantly, I miss the sister talks. Now we are both adults and it's hard to find a good time just to Facetime each other in our busy schedules. I just want my best friend back.

Thank you.

Thank you for being there for me all those years. Thank you for being my bodyguard and got protective whenever a boy even looked at me. Thank you for all the silly times we laughed until we got abs of steel. Thank you for pushing me to do the best I can in school and sports. Thank you for being such a fantastic role model. I couldn't have asked for a better big sister.

I love you, Melissa.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
