If you’re like me, you’ve probably been called out on being sensitive. It has probably become a part of who you are and how others see you. In my experience, most believe that emotional sensitivity is a negative characteristic or something that does not contribute positively to life. I think they’re wrong.
Being called “sensitive” means you have a big heart. You have the ability to give without asking for or expecting anything in return. Does it mean you’re also more likely to get hurt? Unfortunately, yes. You put your heart on the line with almost everyone you meet, and especially those you love. But this isn’t a bad thing. You will know early on whether someone is meant to stay in your life because you give an opportunity to each person you come across. You give everyone the benefit of the doubt, and the opportunity to prove that they are the good you see in them. And if it doesn’t work out, you will not have wasted your time.
More often than not, it’s easier to not feel anything. It’s easier to not get attached and not invest your time in someone or something that could disappoint you. But there is no reality in that way of thinking. We were born to feel. Without experiencing disappointment, sadness or loss, there is no way you can actually be grateful for the moments of bliss. When it comes to emotions, it is courageous to embrace them. You are capable of having experiences across the spectrum, which will give you more wisdom than you can imagine. You’re choosing to find the beauty in life that others want to experience but aren’t always willing to risk. You will always come out stronger.
Being sensitive also means you might take things personally. Why shouldn’t you? Words should have value. People should not say anything if they don’t mean what they are saying anyway. Everyone is affected by words differently. You use this kind of precaution on a daily basis, which makes you considerate. Others appreciate that you tread lightly and with care. You are someone that others can feel safe and fully accepted with. What more could anyone ask for?
While this way of living is rewarding, proceed with caution. It is true that not everyone deserves your trust and loyalty, and it is important to recognize this. But if you’re the kind of person I think you are, this fact won’t stop you from being true to yourself. You have an optimistic view of the world, and you shouldn't let anyone ruin that for you. Have faith in those around you, and have pride in knowing that you will always put your best foot forward.
The next time someone calls you sensitive, take it to heart. Because that’s what makes you you.
