An Open Letter to the Parent I Let Go

I hope someday you understand why I couldn't keep living like this.

I remember the good days. The days you told me you were so proud of me. You told me I was brave and could accomplish great things. You were so excited for me and what my future held. I shared my secrets and dreams with you. You told me I wasn’t just your daughter but also your best friend. And you weren’t just my mother but also my best friend.

But then, I remember the days you drank too much. Those were the same days you told me I was worthless and you hated me. The days you made me feel like I was nothing. Like I had nothing to offer this world. I remember you telling me no one would ever truly care about me and that I wasn’t the type of person people wanted to be around. I remember the night you told me if you knew I would be your daughter you wouldn’t have had one. I also remember when these days outnumbered the good days.

But I forgave you each and every time. You were broken and I tried to understand that. I made excuses for you over and over again mostly because I missed you. You were my best friend and I wanted to share my life with the person who gave me life. But we were stuck on this never ending cycle that I didn’t know how to fix it.

Ten years. That’s how long we’ve been on this cycle. And in those ten years I have realized that this isn’t okay with me anymore and it’s not up to me to fix. I don’t want to keep feeling this way. I asked you over and over again to get help. And after ten years, I’ve come to accept that you will never get yourself help. So I had a choice to make.

I hope someday you can understand why I had to let you go. I have to let you go so I can learn to love myself. I understand you won’t see me graduate college or walk down the aisle. You won’t meet my husband or your grandchildren. But this is the decision I made for myself. I will always love and miss you and I hope that someday you understand.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
