An Open Letter to The Friend I'm No Longer Friends With

Because I thought we would be friends forever.

This isn't a letter for one person, it's a letter for every person that was important to me at one point in my life and for some reason or another no longer is. You were someone I thought I would be friends with for the rest of my life. I probably even considered you one of my best friends at one time. Maybe on some level we still are friends, but it's not the same as it once was.

And it probably never will be; so here's a letter to you:

For some reason or another we've both gone our own ways. Maybe we had a fight, or long distance tore us apart, or maybe over time we just slowly stopped being close.

Whenever I talk about you I tell people we're not friends anymore. I say I don't care anymore, because why would I keep trying to have a friendship with someone who clearly has no interest in being my friend. I blame you for our loss of contact because even though we both stopped caring and stopped trying to salvage our relationship, I'll always believe you were the first person to give up on us.

But then I wonder if you're having the same thoughts.

Maybe neither of us tried hard enough for the other. In your eyes I could be the one at fault. I suppose that's how relationships end, though. When neither person wants to keep trying to be friends. No matter whose fault it was though, our friendship did end.

Most of the time I don't think about you. We've both moved on and I don't like to dwell on things that make me feel sad or angry because often times those are the only feelings I have when I think about you. Every now and then I see your posts on Facebook and Instagram with your new friends and I feel a little envious. We used to post pictures together all the time, but now I've been replaced by strangers. I suppose that's what my Facebook looks like to you too.

Whenever I look through our old pictures, I almost forget that anything has changed. It reminds me of what our friendship used to be. They make me happy about the memories of fun times together because they were important moments between us, but they also make me sad because they remind me that we will never be the same again. Even though I know things between us could never be like that, I still have hope. Maybe one day you'll pick up the phone and say you miss me. Because even though losing our friendship hurt, I would always be willing to try again. That's how much you mean to me.

Until then, I suppose all I have left of you are unanswered questions; ones that may in fact never be answered.

Do you ever think of me? Do you miss what we used to have? Do you think we could ever be friends again?

Maybe one day you will answer these questions. I just want you to know that no matter how much time passes, I will always be here for you if you need anything. But I'm not going to hold my breath. In the end, I just hope you're happy because that’s all true friends really want for each other.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
