An Open Letter To My Long Distance Best Friend

I may only see you three months out of the year, but you're the greatest friend I could ask for.

Dear best friend,

I've known you forever. Each summer, we say hello, and then we have to say goodbye three months later. We are blessed enough to have had the privilege of summering in the same location every year, but a few months throughout the year is not nearly enough.

We've gone through everything together. From playing mermaids in the baby pool, to awkward years with our braces and then to graduating high school, we've done it all. Your helping hand through my life and all of it's changes has been a complete blessing to me.

I know I'm the worst at texting and checking in with you. But, you've gotta know that I think about you every single day. I miss our laughs, our ability to speak to each other with just one look and the fact that we simply know each other like no other. Being able to know someone your entire life, and knowing that nobody will be able to replace that is an amazing feeling. I know I will have you for the rest of my life. My wedding day, I know you'll be there (obviously because you'll be a bridesmaid, I think that was decided 10 years ago). My kids first birthday party, let's face it, you'll probably be a godmother or the fun aunt. You've been there since day one, and I know you're not going to leave now, because you're stuck with me.

You've become a sister to me. I'm part of your family, you're part of mine. It's just kind of how it works. I wouldn't have it any other way. I wouldn't change anything about our friendship. Yes, it'd obviously be so nice to see you every day, but the months we spend together during the summer are something I always have to look forward to. The distance makes us stronger, makes us grow to be separate individuals and gives us the perspective we need to value our amazing friendship.

I want you to know that I will always want the best for you. Even if I'm not constantly being updated on your life, I want you to excel in life and I want to be there to watch your accomplishments. You're going to achieve great things one day, and I'm lucky to be here by your side.

Thank you for the surprises, laughs, memories and a lifetime full of love.

I hope you always remember these things while we wait throughout the year to see each other next. I love you to the moon and back. I'll see you next summer.

Xoxo,

The best friend who misses you to pieces

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
