Dear Superman and Wonder Woman,
I don’t know how you do it. Really, I don’t. You wake up every morning looking to make a positive impact on the world; however, small it may be, dutifully play your role, come home, go to bed and do it all over again. Every. Single. Day. Your good deeds, however, frequently go unrecognized and that isn’t fair. I understand that not everyone is fortunate to witness you in action, but I feel that we take you for granted far too often. In an attempt to correct that, I’d like to say thank you.
Thank you for kissing every boo-boo, wiping every tear, and doing anything to make me smile. Thank you for being the people who will listen to me whine and complain about pointless things and preach about my severely uninformed opinions on a regular basis without complaint. Thank you for the unwavering love and support you’ve shown me in all of my endeavors. Thank you for understanding that at times, I’m 19 on the outside, but not on the inside. Thank you for always being there for me when I need it, when I don’t need it and most importantly, when I think I don’t need it, but I really do.
In the (almost) twenty years that I’ve been alive, you two have taught me the following 20 life lessons which I will carry with me regardless of my location and stage in life:
- It’s better to be over prepared than to be underprepared
- Family comes first
- Take pride in how you look and where you come from
- Be a Jackie, not a Marilyn
- Money is important, but not enough to ruin your health
- Willpower > Brainpower
- It’s okay to let your inner kid out sometimes
- Take lots of pictures
- Give credit where it is due
- If it’s broken, fix it as many times as you can before you throw it away.
- Speech is silver, but silence is gold (especially in arguments)
- Know your limitations, but push yourself once in awhile
- Clean up the messes you make immediately
- If you’re not good at something, it just means that you haven’t practiced enough.
- Be patient, but not a pushover.
- Being independent is the biggest favor you can do yourself.
- Write things down
- Stay informed
- Be resourceful
- Showing someone that you love them means more than just saying it
That being said, I know I can be incredibly ungrateful for all that you’ve done for me and I’d be nothing without you (seriously, I wouldn’t even be alive). So, thank you for loving and caring for me unconditionally.
Sincerely,
Your Biggest Fan
