An Open Letter To My College-Paying Parents
Alexa E. Diehl

Dear Mom & Dad,

I have never doubted that you know how much I appreciate everything you do for me, but I wanted to publicly thank you both for being amazing parents (even though 'amazing' does not even come close to describing how great you are!).

My awesome parents!

First, simply stated, thank you for paying for college. I could have attended a different college/university with a much smaller tuition than the one I currently attend; however, you both insisted that I go to a college that we believe will allow me to succeed to my highest potential. The college that fit our requirements just so happens to be one that costs quite a lot of money!

I truly appreciate your financial help so that I can focus on my studies and activities without having to worry about tuition. I am also equally grateful for you allowing my three younger siblings to experience the same lifestyle before their big sis' headed off to college. I can imagine that it cannot be easy economically to have to pay for your child's education for four years, but neither of you have ever complained nor made it seem like a burden. I promise that I will succeed during my years at college, get a well paying job, and pay you back in some way - whether it be a vacation, a house, a hot tub, or all three!

My parents, brother, and I at my first day of college.

Thank you for picking up the phone when I call, no matter what day or time. It is extremely satisfying knowing that my parents are always there for me when I need them. Whether I call to ask how to wash my sheets or to get your opinions on a job opportunity, you are always there and willing to talk. I thank you for that!

FaceTiming my family during the first few weeks of school.

I know that you would never not allow me to come back home for a few days or weeks, but I thank you for never complaining about the fact that quite a few miles separate Boston, MA and Toms River, NJ. When breaks come around, you never fail to offer to pick me up or to pay for my train tickets. Thank you for always finding a way for me to come home for breaks and welcoming me back with homemade meals and a clean bed!

My mom and dog welcoming me home.

Most importantly, thank you for being the best role models I could ever have and my greatest supporters. You both lead wonderful lives, and I hope to do the same. I would by no means be where I am today without your help, support, and love! Having parents who support me with every important decision I make allows me to succeed to my highest potential.

My parents showing their support with "#1's!"

To summarize this letter: thank you for being YOU!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
