Dear Nicole,
I am a nineteen year old student who has struggled with weight, binge eating, crash dieting and body image her whole life. I am a lover of YouTube, small puppies and Harry Styles. I was a normal girl, checking her YouTube subscriptions and suggestions when I saw your video. I won't lie and say that I wasn't hurt the first few seconds of your video, until I realized that that was your intended effect, right?
Over the past week, I have been bombarded by the firestorm you have created for yourself on the internet and honestly I cannot help but feel sorry for you.
You see, I may be one hundred pounds heavier than you and the subject of your scrutiny, but I understand the implications of body shaming and the harm that it can cause. In fact, if I was in the same mindset that I was in during high school, I would probably try another crash diet to make myself as skinny as you because how dare I offend you and others with my body?
Your name has been a trending topic, but not for your comedy skills or your talent as a YouTuber. Nobody will ever recognize the talent that you possess because of your insensitive nature. YouTube as a job is already a stereotyped profession, especially for women, and you have gone and sullied the name one more time. In fact you've even lost your job for this; all in the name of comedy right?
If people were ever going to start recognizing YouTube as a legitimate platform in the mainstream media that can provide stable jobs for so many people like you, I think they will reconsider it.
I'm sorry that you think fat shaming is a made up thing. It's a sad reality for a lot of people all around the world and now they have to hear you invalidate their suffering, as if they aren't already invalidated by society enough!
I don't think you understand that being fat is so much more than eating whatever you want. I'm sure everyone who is overweight knows that they might get diabetes or heart disease and that the people who see them walking down the street are uncomfortable by the sight of their body.
There is so much more that I could say to you and I could even attack your appearance, but that would make me just like you, and that is something I would never want to be. I know that bodies, appearance, and self-worth are sensitive and triggering topics and I would never cross the line just for a couple million views, fifteen minutes of fame or subscribers.
There are so many people who hate you, Nicole, and in many ways I don't blame them. What you did was pretty disgusting and triggering for many.
However this fat girl doesn't hate you; I feel sorry for you and while, I think you did some pretty horrible things, I don't hate you. To hate you, I would have to judge you, and since I don't know you or what you have been through, I can't do that.
You should have realized that since you don't know what every fat person in the world has gone through, you aren't able to judge them. I truly hope you learn from this and work on making your YouTube a reflection of your true talent. Not some cheap form of "comedy."
Best,
A Fat Girl Named Adrianna
