“What does your mom do for a living?” is probably the most common question you’ll hear throughout your experience in school. What she does can ultimately shape what you end up doing with your life. “My mom is a nurse,” “My mom is a teacher,” “My mom is a chef.” “When I grow up, I want to be just like her.”
Throughout my entire education process, I heard my friends talk about the array of jobs that their moms held. Some silly, some extremely important. I explained, “That’s really cool,” “your mom must be great at what she does!” But when it came time for me to answer the same question, I simply stated, “My mom is a stay at home mom.”
A lot of people looked at me in a strange way – especially early on in my education. “Well, what does she do?” “Does she do anything?” I never understood how to answer all the questions, especially in my younger years. Now, being 21 years old, I can honestly say that there’s no other job that my mom does better.
Being a stay at home mom doesn’t mean that you sit on your butt all day watching TV. It means waking up early to get the kids ready for school, take care of our ever so rambunctious dogs, clean, dust, and a number of other things that I could not thank her enough for. I never had to worry about fending for myself after school because my parents both worked. My brothers and I were fortunate enough to have a mother who would greet us when we got home with a smile, a snack, and a simple, “How was your day, honey?”
So thank you, mom. Thank you for always being there for me. Thank you for holding my hand during the rough times. Thank you for helping me through life and teaching me what I needed to know. I know I don’t tell you this nearly enough, but I am beyond thankful for you and everything you’ve done for me. Obviously you’re the only mom I’ve ever had, but you’re still my favorite, and if I could’ve picked my mom I would still choose you. I love you more than you’ll ever know.
My mom isn’t a doctor, a teacher, or a chef, but who she is to me and everything she has done means so much more than any of that. She is my provider, my life line, my hero and above all else she is my best friend. She is the strongest, most amazing mom in the entire world and yes, I want to be just like her when I grow up.
