Dear roommate,
We're finally finishing up Junior year and we're both crazy scared and excited for the future. Next year, we'll be graduating and going out to live a true adult life on our own. I know from all those midnight heart-to-hearts that we both don't feel ready, but I'm here to tell you that you are ready.
It's crazy to think about, but we haven't even known each other a full two years yet. We were kind of thrown together as roommates, but somehow it worked so well to the point where we're now basically best friends.
We have our rough patches. I'm messy and sassy to the point of bitchy. You like to talk and get so tense sometimes. Some people don't get how we live together and sometimes I can't see it either.
But then that moment happens and everything is okay. In that moment, we need each other and we have each other; everything is okay again.
You were there when I was diagnosed with depression and when my boyfriend broke up with me. You handed me a tissue, turned on "Friends," and sat in silence with me. You know what makes me feel better when I have a bad day.
I was there a year ago when your life was turned upside down. I sat with you at 2 AM when your emotions finally hit. I knew you just needed me there.
Not only did you accept me into your life, but your family did as well. Your mom came all the way to Colorado so that we could be together. Your family let me join them for Thanksgiving. I've never been so grateful.
I could write a book about how you've changed my life over the past year and a half. Your pure energy every day has kept me going. Your smile, laugh and extrovertedness has gotten me through the past two years.
That is why you're going to be fine in the big, bad world. You're the strongest person I know and you have so many skills that will get you through anything. You have an amazing support system of friends and family that can help you when you trip.
You're going to find a man that loves you. You're going to find a dream job that completes you. You'll get to play golf all the time and, most importantly, you'll be happy.
I just hope I get to be by your side. I hope I get to toast you at your wedding, be at your 50th birthday party, sit in the rocker next to you when we're old. You are the most important part of my life and I want to be there for the important parts of your life.
So, dear roommate, thank you. Thank you for always being there when I need you. Thank you for being my best friend. Thank you for keeping me in line. Thank you for you.
